It looks like we are finally going to get the jetpack into Fortnite. If you haven't been following the game for too long, this was a previously leaked and mentioned item in the past. Epic was set to release it, but either decided against it or deemed it too buggy. Now that we've had our fill of hop rocks, it seems Epic has gotten the item to a place where they can finally add it to the game!

Jetpack Release Date

The jetpack was released in-game on May 22nd, 2018 for a LIMITED time. This jetpack seems to be part of the season 4 theme of technology/superheroes/aliens or whatever theme you believe it has been assigned.

Jetpack Close Encounters Limited Time Mode

This new limited time mode called "Close Encounters" will be release this week as well. It was leaked via FNBR Leaks, with the following description:

Close Quarters Combat with Shotguns & Jetpacks! If you find a jetpack, double-tap the jump button to take off. Keep the button held down to apply thrust. Make sure to land before it runs out of fuel!

How-to Get and Find the Jetpack

The Jetpack is a Legendary item that can be found in Treasure Chests. These are going to be relatively rare, so be on the look out for them if you eliminate an enemy! If you really want to try one out, I would head to the Solid Gold v.2 limited time mode where legendary items drop out of chests every time.

Backpack Item Type

The jetpack is a new item type called, Backpacks. Learn about all of the upcoming backpacks, with our Fortnite Backpacks Guide!

Here's the official information on these from Epic:

The Jetpack is the first of a new item type: Backpacks.

  • Backpacks take an inventory slot (like weapons & consumables) and can be moved to different positions.
  • Only one Backpack can be carried at a time.
    • If you pick up a different Backpack, it will be automatically swapped with the one currently equipped.
  • When a Backpack is fully consumed, it will be automatically destroyed.
  • While a Backpack is equipped, your Back Bling cosmetics will be hidden.
    • Back Bling will be reapplied when the Backpack is no longer equipped.

How-to Use the Jetpack

It looks like the Jetpack is pretty simple to use. Double tap your jump button and keep it held down to apply thrust. If you are just in the air, you can press and hold the jump button to engage the thrusters. The jetpack has a limited amount of fuel, so be sure to be close to land before you run out or you will be taking fall damage.

The jetpack will replace whatever your back bling is once it is added to your inventory.

Jetpack Overheating

A Jetpack can overheat! While you have a fuel gauge where the item exists in your inventor, there is a heat gauge on the two propulsion tanks on the jetpack. If you bring these down all the way to the bottom the light ring will blink, and the jetpack will overheat and be unusable for a short period of time. Make sure you don't let this happen while you are in the air or you will fall to your demise!

Jetpack Fuel

The jetpack has a fair amount of fuel, but every time you use it some is consumed. Once this tank runs out, the jetpack is automatically destroyed and will be removed from your inventory. You can only hold one jetpack or backpack item type in your inventory at once.

Does the Jetpack take up an item slot?

This has been confirmed that jetpacks will take up a slot in your inventory.
