Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club 100% Walkthrough

There are no side quests or diversions from the mystery of Emio; in order to 100% this creepy title, you will just need to complete all 14 chapters. Here are all the answers to each of the question that will be put to you.

Prologue: A Face

When the prompt box shows up in the upper left-hand corner, you will have the options to Ask/Listen and to Think. You will want to Ask/Listen twice; the third time you press the Ask/Listen button, you will get several options:

  • Victim
  • Cause of Death
  • Time of Death
  • Observations?

It's important to click on each option multiple times until you start to get repeated answers. After clicking on each several times, the officer will mention that there was an Observation. This is when you want to click on the final button, like Observations? button. This will add a new button to your menu: Look/Examine. There will be loads of things to look at, but the most important will be the bicycle. After that, select Look/Examine, then select Victim from that menu.

This will begin an interaction with a new character. Use the Look/Examine function to look closer at Kuze. In order to properly interact with all your surroundings and get all the clues, you will want to make sure to completely exhaust all dialogue and informative sections in the interacts menu. Once you have finished all the interactions, you will finish the tutorial section and start chapter 1.

Chapter 1: The Urban Legend

After interacting with Ayumi, you will be tasked with coming up with more information on the murder victim and the Smiling Man urban legend. Chat with Ayumi until you exhaust her options, after which you have two multiple choice answers to choose from. The answers are:

  • "Based on what I know so far, I suspect homicide."
  • "It's just like the Smiling Man urban legend."

This will give you the ability to head to the police station to ask some more questions. You'll need to speak with Detective Kamihara at length about the Smiling Man and the murders from 18 years ago. When he asks you a question, answer with "They were strangled differently." Back at the agency, you and Ayumi will go over what you learned that day. The answers are:

  • "Eighteen years ago."
  • "Were teenage girls."
  • Say you have no idea who the murderer is.

Can you change your name later in Emio?

You have to choose both a first and a last name during your playthrough of Emio - the Smiling Man. You will be sitting with these characters for about 12-15 hours, so you want to make sure you pick the right name. This cannot be changed in anyway if you change your mind; you'd have to start the game over to pick a new one.

Chapter 2: Disappearance

In chapter 2, you will finally catch up with Kamada at the police station. He will ask about the critical difference between the killings, and your answer should be "The victims were killed in a different manner." He will give you permission to scour the crime scene. Look around, then chat with Kamihara. He will leave you waiting for the bus. When you get the option to use your phone, select "But the battery." If you try to use the phone, it will die. Once inside the cab, select "It must be for some other reason." Make sure to listen to the cabbie's story by choosing "Let's hear it."

After this, you will switch perspectives to Ayumi, who has gone to the middle school to talk to the students. Choose either "How in the world could I do that?" or "Wait, you're talking about THAT?" when speaking to the two upperclass girls; it doesn't matter to the plot. Keep chatting with them both until they need to leave for cram school. Once you are back at the Utsugi Agency, you will discuss the case again with Ayumi and Utsugi. The answers to the questions are:

  • "We can't yet be sure if he had anything to do with the killings."
  • "We can't be sure if there's any connection between this murder and the ones from 18 years ago."
  • The answer you need to type out is The Smiling Man. You can also type in Emio; either will work.

Chapter 3: The Language of Flowers

Now you are by the detective's childhood home, you will need to interact with the cabbage patch and truck a few times to find someone to talk to. Once you are at the house, you will need to interact with the window, the door, the mailbox, the clothesline, the grass, and try to call out a couple of times with Call/Engage. A neighbor will hear you and come to help. Tell Tayama the truth by choosing "(I'll be honest and say who I am.)"

In the retirement home, when speaking with Yoshie, you should say "No, I haven't told her," when asked if you've told Kuze, but either answer is fine. If you get stuck during this conversation, make sure to click on the Look button and look at the purple flowers several times. During the review back at the Agency, you will need to answer three different questions. Here are the answers:

  • "Because Makoto picked the eggplant flowers."
  • Choose Detective Kuze's page, then click on "Bookmark containing a pressed eggplant flower."
  • "The house will be demolished soon."

Chapter 4: A Suspect

In the library, you will need to check out the newspaper articles from 18 years ago in order to go over the previous murders that are possibly connection with this new one. Check over all the books, then look them again to get all the extra information. When you have to answer the question of when Makoto disappeared, the answer is "July." At the end, you will need to review you information you learned.

  • Select "Ayaka Hashizume" from the list of people of interest.
  • Second, select Ayaka's father "Manabu Hashizume" from the list of people of interest.
  • For the third answer, pick "the Missing Man" from the list of people of interest.
  • The fourth answer is Fire.
  • The fifth answer is Blood.

Next up is Ayumi's chat with Fukuyama at the coffee shop. Keep pushing the teacher to disclose information about Megumi and why she was missing from school. Choose the "(It would mean Megumi knows the killer!)" answer. Once back at the Utsugi Agency, review your notes with Ayumi, and choose these answers:

  • "Getting into a private school."
  • "We don't know."
  • Then Look/Observe at Ayumi, then talk to her again.

Chapter 5: The Paper Bag

The next day, Dice will pick you up from the Agency to drive you to the police station before you can head back to the library. He will ask you a single question, and the correct answer is "While we were still talking at the bus stop." It will take a lot of Asking/Listening and Look/Observing and Think button presses to get through the car ride to the station, but keep clicking through the menus until you pull up to the station. After Kuze grills you, you will be called into a meeting. Once it is over, you will review you own notes on the forensics of the bag. Here are the two answers needed:

  • Choose "(Very likely to be connected.)"
  • Then "(The first victim might have been killed by someone else.)"
  • Use the Think and Phone menu, then you'll have another review.
  • "(They talk about candy that they loved when they were little kids.)"
  • The answer to the last questions is "motorcycles."

Ayumi will call you, and you need to pick up the phone. If you do not, you need to call her back to move on. Back at the Agency, you will review everything from the beginning with Ayumi. There will be quite a few questions, but memorizing the answers will be helpful in the future.

  • "Asphyxiation from being strangled with a cord-like object."
  • The answer to the second question requires you to choose Bag from The Smiling Man's menu.
  • Select The Smiling Man for question three.
  • Select Ayaka Hashizume then pick Serial Girl Murders from her pages.
  • Next, click on Ayaka Hashizume, then press ZR once, press A to select Sachiko Takagi, then press ZL again and press A to select the third victim Mika Inoue.
  • Select The Missing Man and Makoto Kuze.
  • Choose "Getting into a good high school."
  • Choose "Matched to the second and third bags found in the murders 18 years ago."
  • Choose "It was different from the paper bags found on other victims."

Chapter 6: Existence

During the beginning of chapter 6, you will play as Ayumi chatting with Megumi's mother. You will need to look at all the photos in the background and go through all the menu options to move on. When you get back to the Agency, you will get the option to tell Ayumi whether she should call her Senpai again. Make sure to tell her: "You don't need to talk to him again just yet."

At the police station, you will want to make sure you are Look/Observing at all characters when able. When you review the information you and Ayumi have seen together after, the answers are as follows:

Choose a name in Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club.

  • "What she saw on the talk show."
  • "Recite a spell."
  • In the Smiling Man's bio, go to the third page and choose: "The paper bag found on Eisuke Sasaki's head looked just like the one Megumi saw on the Smiling Man."
  • Choose "Tsubasa Fukuyama."
  • Choose "Hiromi Morimoto."
  • The answer to type in for this question is "suicide."
  • Choose "The Smiling Man."
  • Choose "The Smiling Man."

Chapter 7: Irumo Village

After visiting the police station, you will get to chat with Kamada. Tell him "I'm going to Koufuku Station." Once you meet up with Kamihara, he will ask you a quiz question. The answer is "Working separately today and you're meeting up later." During the review at the end of the chapter, the answers will be:

  • "43 years old."
  • On the last page of Kamihara's file, choose "didn't share the info about the motorcycle."
  • From the list of people, choose "Makoto Kuze."
  • From the people list, pick "Yoshie Kuze."

Chapter 8: Brother and Sister

During this chapter, you will need to question the murder victim's friend, talk with some other middle school students, and then visit Yoshie at the retirement home. While speaking to Fukuyama before speaking with Kohei, he will ask you questions about Ayumi. For the answer to his question, choose "Because Tachibana joined the club!" After that, make sure to Show Fukuyama your Superior friendship with Ayumi.

When speaking to Kohei, make sure to "Back off on the questioning" or you will spook him from saying more. Outside of the middle school, you will hear voices; make sure to use Look/Observe on the right part of the screen where the two girls are hiding behind the fence. After this, you will go see Yoshie. She will offer you a photo of Makoto; you have the choice between all four pictures, but there doesn't seem to be a difference in which you choose. I chose the one in the bottom left of him at the middle school entrance ceremony in front of the cherry blossom trees. Select Kimiharu Kamada from the list to go visit him at the police station. You'll receive a call at the end of the chapter, make sure to pick it up.

Chapter 9: A Visitor

Look around the area until you find the "Shoko Bar," then head inside. After chatting with Kamihara, you'll need to talk to Mama Shoko. You need to be able to tell her real name, so you will need to study the posters on the wall. Near the bottles at the bar will be a "Food Hygiene Manager Certificate" with the name Michiyo Miyashita on it. This is Mama Shoko's real name, and you can type in her first, last, or full name to get this one right.

After the events with Kuze at her home, you will return to the Agency and chat with Ayumi. When you ask her to review the day's notes, she will agree.

  • "A hair clip taped to the paper."
  • "Her mother."
  • Select "Emiko" from the list of people.

Chapter 10: Minoru Tsuzuki

At the beginning of chapter 10, Ayumi is trying to remember where she saw a similar tie to the one you were talking about. She will think about people she knows who wear a tie, then she will choose one of those three.

  • "I saw someone wearing a similar tie."
  • From the name list, choose: Daisuke Kamihara, Shunsuke Utsugi, and the Eager Junior High School Student.
  • "The boy at Minami Daisan Junior High School."
  • Use the call function to get a hold of Fukuyama.

On the street, talk to everyone, then Think. You will remember that the Shoko bar might still be open. Head over there, and you will hear screaming. Talk to Mama Shoko and learn more about the Missing Man from 18 years ago. Interact with all the people on the street in Kamematsu, especially the woman in the leopard print outfit. She will direct you to a car shop.

When talking to Fukuyama, if you get stuck, make sure to Look/Observe his face, and make sure to think about his connections to his students. While at the car shop in Kamematsu, you will also need to Look/Observe Mr. Todoroki's face to keep him talking. You will get the option to tell the Todorokis about the murder, but you should choose: "There's no point in talking about it." When you return to the Agency, the answers to the review are:

  • "Still missing."
  • "To give his sister a ride in his own car."
  • Click on Mr. Todoroki and choose "Car."
  • Also under Mr. Todoroki's name, you can find the "Sheet-Metal Sheers."
  • When Utsugi asks you who is connected to the Smiling Man, you should choose Minoru Tsuzuki from the list.

Chapter 11: Suspicion

After talking to Kamihara in the morning, you will need to find your way back to Todoroki Motors, then to Kamematsu Station. Talk to the kids that are wearing paper bags on their heads, and then ask them about the Haunted Apartment. If you try to travel to the Koufuku Station, you will end up at a construction site instead. Talk to the construction worker and show him the sketches until he leaves for lunch. Then return to Todoroki Motors.

When talking to Mrs. Todoroki, choose the "I should be honest with her and ask for her cooperation." This will seem like a mistake at first, but keep talking to both the Todorokis. Look at Mr. Todoroki's face, then show the couple your "Boy Detective skills."

When you are at the apartment building, look at the Rope, Window, Door, Ground, Stairs, and Wall. Then an old man will appear on the right side of the screen. Click the Look/Observe on him to begin to speak with him. This is probably the most annoying interaction in the whole game; you need to keep speaking with him, thinking, and observing until he repeats the same things. Then try to travel away. This will draw the attention of his caretaker, who will come get him.

Go to the construction site, then go to Koufuku Station. Speak with Mama Shoko, then return to Kamematsu Station and speak with the kids with the bags on their heads. Keep talking to them until they begin to repeat, then go back to the construction site. Chat with the men there and show them the sketches. This will take you to Yamanba Pass.

Final Chapter: The Truth

At Yamanba Pass, there will be some tracks going up into the mountains. Follow them, then keep following the tracks deeper into the forest. Look carefully at the trampled plants to keep following the footprints, then take the Road to the Left. At the next intersection, follow the Road to the Left. Make sure to look at the Ribbon tied to the tree, then head in that direction across the water.

When you reach the Jizo statue, look at it, then choose to go behind the Jizo Statue. Look/Observe each of the four abandoned homes, then speak with Kuze. Exhaust ALL the options, then choose "Save/Exit Investigation." This will start a handful of cutscenes with minimal interact on your part, but make sure to Look/Observe everything you can when able.

Minoru Epilogue: Depths

Choose to call Utsugi back, and select "Yes." After you get to the deliquent center, you will want to choose "Yes, I do" when talking to the councilor. When you get the option to choose what you think Minoru liked about Todoroki Motors, choose the second option: "He liked the name "Todoroki."" The rest of this chapter will be cutscenes.
