Game design is always improving, and the mechanics we have today are the best we have ever had. That being said, there is just something about going back to an older one that had a different feel and look, and getting nostalgic over the more arcade-like nature of things!
In Vice City, the Heart icons are for replenishing your Health. When you run through these, you will be topped back up to 100 if your Health has taken a dip through battle, explosions, or any other random events that happen in GTA!

Don't get us wrong, health bars that auto replenish are very handy indeed, and using items like health kits is also a good method. However, there is something about seeing a big heart and being able to run into it that is satisfying!
The only thing is that they are not as readily available as health kits that sit in your inventory, but we managed when the game first came out, and we will surely be able to manage again!
You can also always bulk up your defense level by purchasing some armor from Ammunition.
