Silksong fans are down bad after Nintendo Direct

This is starting to get old.

After yet another Nintendo Direct without any news of the long-awaited Hollow Knight sequel, Hollow Knight Silksong, I understand the fanbase’s anguish. With the original Hollow Knight releasing way back in 2017, and the sequel announced in 2019, the lack of a release date is proving to be torturous.

Nintendo's jam-packed showing on June 18th, 2024 revealed a whole treasure trove of new titles, including hotly anticipated games such as Metroid Prime 4 and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, but absolutely nothing on Hollow Knight Silksong. No fair.

Naturally, fans are starting to go a little crazy, suspecting that the game will never actually be released. Maybe it's all just been a dream. 2019? That feels like decades ago. Maybe this has been some sort of collective hallucination.

This spiral of despair has led the passionate yet good-humored Hollow Knight community on Reddit to poke fun at all the things that have actually been announced and released before Hollow Knight Silksong. A new Metroid game, a new Zelda game, even...Leonardo da Vinci as a Magic the Gathering card?

With GTA VI supposedly releasing in 2025 and Metroid Prime 4 finally being unveiled with full gameplay and all the works, Hollow Knight fans are slowly but surely realizing they are the ones being left behind – stuck in an agonizing sort of purgatory knowing that Silksong exists somewhere out there, yet not knowing if and when they'll actually be able to play it. An exhausting state of being, to say the least.

Perhaps the weight of the anticipation has gotten to Hollow Knight developers Team Cherry. The original game is certainly a beloved title, having even reached classic status in the eyes of many gamers. So I can imagine the pressure to deliver on (and exceed) expectations must certainly be high. But come on, Team Cherry – throw a dog a bone. The fans deserve something: a development update, new screenshots, maybe even some gameplay. Here's to hoping Hollow Knight fans will be freed from their agony sooner rather than later.
