How to save your progress in Lords of the Fallen

Rest up and secure your well-earned progression!

No matter what RPG game I play, I'm always looking to save my progress as much as possible, and probably a little too often. However, as with most other Souls-like games, Lords of the Fallen is a little more challenging regarding saving and checkpoints. Dying is a lot more of a consequence when you can't save as often, which is why you'll want to take every opportunity to do so, given the chance. Here are a few ways you can save in Lords of the Fallen.

How to save in Lords of the Fallen

Unfortunately, saving in Lords of the Fallen isn't as simple as opening your menu and pressing a button; it is more of a checkpoint-type system that can only be done in specific locations, making it more frustrating when you do happen to die. There are only two ways you can save: Vestige Shrines and Vestige Seedlings.

Vestige Shrines are the primary way you can save your progress. These are large statues surrounded by Umbral flowers that hold a lantern much like yours in their hands. They are usually found at major checkpoints in the game, like the entrance to a new area, and occasionally before significant bosses. When interacting with these shrines, you can select 'Rest,' which will save your game, restore your health, and replenish your healing and ammo. The next time you die, you will respawn at this point. Keep in mind 'Resting' will respawn all the enemies in the area as well.

The other convenient way to save your progress in Lords of the Fallen is to plant your own Vestige, which can be done with a Vestige Seed. Vestige Seedlings will basically give you the same options as a Vestige Shrine: to 'Rest' and level up your skills and will allow you to respawn here if you die.

To plant a Vestige Seed, first, make sure you have one available in your inventory. Then, look for white Umbral flowers growing on the ground, hold out your lantern, and press the vestige button shown at the bottom right around your lantern skills. This will grow out a zombie-looking creature from the vines, which you can use as a Vestige.

Vestige Seeds can be acquired in a few different ways: by picking them on an enemy's body as loot, in a chest, or from an NPC character. The first one you will receive from the Iron Wayfarer NPC right before going off to fight Pieta. Usually, you will earn them before major boss fights or directly after the boss fight so you can save your progress and replenish your health and ammunition.

Always keep your eyes peeled for Vestige Shrines or Umbral flowers growing on the ground while you traverse through the world. You'll want to make sure you take the opportunity to save and heal up as much as possible so you don't have to spawn all the back in another area.
