How to Breed Dogs in Minecraft

PUPPIES.

Dogs (or instead, Wolves) were added to Minecraft back in 2011 for Beta Version 1.4. This makes them one of the oldest animals in the game! We've been able to tame Wolves and turn them into pet Dogs for almost the same amount of time. However, even with them having been in the game for a decade, there are no instructions on breeding them.

How to Breed Dogs in Minecraft

Luckily, breeding pets is as easy as taming them. With Wolves, it simply requires three things: two Wolves and two pieces of meat. The choice of meat you use isn't exactly important. The only limitation on that front is that you can't use any type of fish, raw or cooked, to breed Wolves.

Let's start with all the different types of food you can use to breed Wolves. The list below shows all your options. When breeding Wolves, you can pick any two of them; they don't have to be the same.

  • Beef (Raw or Cooked)
  • Chicken (Raw or Cooked)
  • Rabbit (Raw or Cooked)
  • Porkchop (Raw or Cooked)
  • Mutton (Raw or Cooked)

Once you have at least two pieces of meat from the list above, bring them to your two Dogs/Wolves to get started with breeding!

Make sure your Wolves are not in their sitting position. If they are sitting down, press the secondary action button to change them to the standing position. If they are sitting down, they won't move, so they won't breed.

Put the food you chose into your active inventory slot (your character's main hand). Your pet Wolves will likely turn its head and keep its eyes fixated on you. Approach the first wolf and feed it the meat by pressing the secondary action button. Your dog will chomp down on the food, and red hearts will flutter around it. This means that the first dog is ready for breeding.

Repeat this process with the second dog. It will do the same thing, and then the two dogs will walk towards each other, hearts still fluttering around them. They will spin around each other for a few seconds, and a baby Wolf (trained to you) will appear! Congrats, you're now a Dog Breeder! Give it a good name, yeah?
