How to grow red and brown mushrooms in Minecraft

There are two types of Minecraft mushrooms, red and brown, and both can be grown in the same ways. The primary method is to make a farm either underground or on the surface with a roof above it; you will need to place mushrooms on dirt if you want them to spread to other blocks as they grow.

You will also need to have a farm area with at least a light level of 12 before you can place the mushrooms. You can accomplish this on the surface by placing a roof above the farm; however, you will also need to be careful with how you place your torches. If you put too many, the mushrooms won't grow; if you put too little, hostile mobs will start to spawn. That said, to get around this, you will need to use either use recessed lighting or spread your torches out.

But if you have trouble getting the right light level, you can outright ignore it by planting the shrooms in the following blocks listed below.

  • Nylium: Nylium is a new addition with the Nether update; you can also find two versions of it. One is in warped forests, and the other is in crimson forests.
  • Mycelium: You can find mycelium in mushroom field biomes. As a side note, make sure to have a shovel enchanted with silk touch before attempting to break any mycelium blocks; if you break a block without it, you will just destroy the block.
  • Podzol: If you want to find Podzol, you can find it inside the giant tree taiga and the giant spruce taiga biomes.

When you plant mushrooms in any of the above blocks, they can grow safely at any light level. However, building a farm is a lot of work, and there is a better way to get a lot of mushrooms fast; it is by growing giant mushrooms.

You will need a lot of room to grow giant mushrooms, at least four or more blocks on all sides of brown mushrooms and three on red mushrooms. You will also need to use one of the three blocks we listed above; along with this, you will need to have some bonemeal to get the mushrooms to grow.

Once you got the blocks placed, get your bonemeal, and put it in your hotbar, and use your interaction key on the mushroom. Doing this will grow the mushroom into a giant one, and harvesting it can get you around 20 mushrooms. But be warned, you might need to use more than one bonemeal on a mushroom, depending on the block it is planted on. Luckily, getting bonemeal is really easy in Minecraft when you have a composter
