How to install mods on Minecraft Java

Let's get modding.

Mods open up a world of possibilities to a game that might otherwise feel a little stale. If you want to reignite your passion for Minecraft, you may want to consider installing some mods to make your gaming experience more personal to your interests. Here's how you do that.

Installing mods on Minecraft Java

The first thing you need to do to install mods is to make sure that you're playing Minecraft: legacy Java Edition. Unfortunately, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition doesn't support mods, so you'll need to install the Java Edition if you want mods.

Preparing for mods

Once that's installed, you'll want to download and install the latest version of Java if it's not already on your computer. These preliminary steps will set you up to download the Forge mod installer, which will let you download and install Minecraft mods, like no chat report. You can find mods for Minecraft on the Curseforge site.

Once you've picked the mod you want, you'll need to make sure you have a mods folder for Minecraft. The exact address should read:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft

If that doesn't turn up any results, you can make a mod folder by heading to your Local Disc (C) and opening the Users folder. Open up your user folder and then double-click on AppData to open it. In there, open up the Roaming folder before finally selecting the .minecraft folder.

There should be a mods folder inside the .minecraft folder but if there isn't, simply make a new folder and name it Mods.

Downloading specific mods

Return to the mod you want on Curseforge and click on the mod to open up its page. Don't just click on the download button because there's a good chance that the mod you want requires a few other mods to work properly. The mod's page should display all of the other mods you'll need for it to work.

Once you're confident that you want to download the mod, click download and then choose Save As. We recommend saving the mod file to your downloads folder. Go to your downloads and copy the file before pasting it into your mods folder. Once all of your mods are installed, open Minecraft and make sure you're playing with the Forge mod installer as your Minecraft version. Click play, and you should be good to go. Happy modding!
