How to make a Blast Furnace in Minecraft

The blast furnace is a great device that allows you to smelt things in half the time as a normal furnace. You can also smelt armor and tools, if you no longer have use for them. We'll be taking a look at how to make a blast furnace in Minecraft survival 1.14, 1.15, and 1.16 in this step-by-step guide.

The blast furnace can be made in all versions of the game, whether it's PE, PS4, PC, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, or any other platform.

How to Create a Blast Furnace

Time needed: 10 minutes.

To make a blast furnace in Minecraft you will need five iron ingots, one furnace, and three smooth stone. It's not too difficult to round up these materials, but smooth stone isn't a typical thing we use in recipes, so creating it might be new to you!

  1. Create a Furnace

If you don't have an extra one of these already, then you'll want to craft one real quick. Just throw eight cobblestone into your crafting table to make a furnace. You might want to create two furnaces, because one will be used in the process of creating the blast furnace.Crafting recipe for a furnace

  2. Obtain Iron Ore

We're going to need five iron ore, which can be found pretty much anywhere there's stone to be mined. Both caves and ravines are great places to find the ore. Any space that's opened up which gives you a lot of surface area to explore makes it easier to spot it. You also might see it in the side of a mountain or hill. If you can't find it that way, mine your way downwards, and you should eventually come across it. It's one of the more common ores you will find in the game.Iron ore example

  3. Create Iron Bars

We need five iron bars to create the iron bars we'll need for the blast furnace. This can be accomplished by throwing in our iron ore into a normal furnace with some fuel.

  4. Create Smooth Stone

We need three smooth stone, so to create it we're going to need stone. This requires us to either have a silk touch pickaxe, which can mine stone and receive it normally, or we'll have to smelt some cobblestone. Once you've got your three normal stone, throw that in the furnace and heat it up into smooth stone!Crafting recipe for smooth stone

  5. Create the Blast Furnace

Now all we need to do is put all our ingredients together to complete the blast furnace recipe! Place your furnace in the middle of the grid, place three iron bars across the top, one iron bar on either side of the furnace, and line the bottom with smooth stone to create it!

There is one negative about the blast furnace, and it's that you get half the experience for smelting things as you do in the normal furnace. This isn't a big deal to me, because the majority of the time you're likely just getting experience from an xp farm, and not too worried about what you earn from a furnace. However, if this is a concern to you, then you can always just stick with a normal furnace, and just make a bunch of them to save time!
