How to make a Furnace in Minecraft

One of the earliest and most important things you're going to make in Minecraft is the Furnace. This will help you smelt ore into ingots which can be used to craft tools and armor, or even cook food that will have you surviving more easily. So, let's take a step-by-step look at how to make a Furnace in this tutorial!

How to make a Furnace

To make a furnace in Minecraft, you will need to gather some wood, make a Crafting Table, create a pickaxe, then mine some stone to craft it! We'll walk you through it step-by-step below.

Step 1: Gather a Wood Log

Since we're likely just starting out, we'll need to gather a wood log. This can be done by punching a tree! While this is a slow method, we can speed up the process in the future by creating an axe. However, right now we don't need to do that so just punch the trunk of the tree to gather wood.

You only need a single log of wood for the Crafting Table, but you should grab at least three or four because we'll need them for later.

Step 2: Create Wood Planks

Now that we have a wood log, we'll need to make some wood planks! Open up your inventory and place the log into the crafting area.

We get four planks of wood for each log we place in there which is exactly what we need. Grab those newly crafted planks and place them into your inventory or toolbar.

Step 3: Create the Crafting Table

Keep that inventory open, because you'll now want to place the four wood planks in each of the blank spots of the crafting area to make the Crafting Table.

Grab the Crafting Table and place it into your toolbar (bottom bar in this menu)! You'll want to then close your inventory, select the Crafting Table, and place it on the ground.

Step 4: Create Sticks

If you didn't turn all of your wood logs into planks, you can go ahead and do that now. We're going to need three sticks, so place two planks into your Crafting Table to create them like this:

Grab the sticks and place them in your inventory.

Step 5: Create the Wooden Pickaxe

Place three wood planks at the top of your Crafting Table window and then place two sticks on top of each other down the middle. If you do it as shown below, you'll see a Wooden Pickaxe in the completed box!

Grab that pickaxe and place it into your toolbar for ease of use!

Step 6: Find Stone

Stone is found all over the place! You can find it in caves, scattered around in various formations, and if all else fails you can dig down into the dirt or sand to locate some. However, if you do decide to dig down, make sure to not dig straight down! This is the one rule to Minecraft that you must follow, because if you dig down you might fall into a hole or right into some lava! Once you find yourself some stone, you will need to mine it with your new pickaxe and obtain eight total cobblestone!

Step 7: Craft the Furnace

Just head back to your Crafting Table and place your eight cobblestone in a ring while leaving the center empty.

Now, just grab the Furnace out of the creation window and place it into your inventory!

Furnace Fuel

You can use all sorts of things for fuel by placing it in the bottom of the Furnace inventory. The most common thing to use is Coal, Charcoal, or Wood Logs. You'll find Coal pretty commonly while you're mining, which is worth picking up for fuel or creating Torches. Wood Logs or Planks will work for you if you haven't had a chance to mine much!
