Axes are one of the beginning game tools you will want to create very early in your Minecraft playthrough. They are quite useful for chopping down trees, but they also do more single target damage than a sword! So, we'll take you step-by-step in this tutorial on how to make an Axe in Minecraft.
How to make an Axe

To make an Axe in Minecraft, we'll just need to gather some wood, make some planks, make some sticks, and then put it all together! We'll show you exactly how to do that in the steps below.
- Punch Some Trees
Assuming we don't have an axe at this stage, then we're going to need to punch a tree! Just go up to any old tree and start punching the trunk. Once you've hit it enough, you will get a wood log. Get at least three of these!
- Make Wood Planks
Open up your inventory and place the wood logs into the crafting area. Each log will create four planks, and we'll need nine in total.
- Make a Crafting Table
Take four of your planks and fill up the crafting space in your inventory. This will give us a Crafting Table!
- Make Sticks
Now we're going to two sticks. Place two wood planks into your Crafting Table or crafting area in your inventory. Stack the planks on top of each other to get four sticks!
- Create the Axe
We have all the ingredients we need, so we just need to put it all together. If you haven't already, place your Crafting Table on the ground somewhere. Open it up and place two sticks starting at the bottom up the middle. Then take three wood planks and place them as demonstrated in the following image.
That's everything you need to know to make a basic wooden axe! You can make higher quality versions with the same recipe by replacing the wooden planks with cobblestone, iron bars, and even Diamonds once you find some!
