If you're getting a bit lonely out there in the Minecraft world then you might want to find yourself a feline companion. However, just like in real life, these little fur-balls can be a bit elusive, so getting one to stay by your side can sometimes be difficult. Well, if you're having a bit of trouble, we'll walk you through the process of getting a cat pet for yourself in Minecraft with this guide!
How to Tame a Cat
To tame a cat in Minecraft, you will need to find one at either a village or Witch Hut in a swamp biome. Once you have located an untamed cat, you can then feed the stray cat with either raw cod or raw salmon, which can be obtained from fishing. You will know the cat has been tamed once it has a collar around its neck!
Gather Raw Cod or Salmon
Cats require either cod or salmon to be tamed, so you are going to need to do some fishing or gathering to get them. Both of these fish can be found in normal, cold, or lukewarm ocean biomes. You can either see them swimming around in the water and attack them with your sword, or you can use your fishing rod to fish the waters and obtain them that way.
Find a Cat in a Village
Cats can be found in two different areas, one of which is at a village. These can be found randomly around your Minecraft world and contain villagers that you can trade with. As long as there is at least one villager and four beds in the village there can be a possible cat spawn. One cat can possibly spawn per every four valid beds for a maximum of 10 cats. So, if you want 10 cats to spawn at the village, make sure there are 40 beds!
If you aren't opposed to using commands, you can use the "/locate village" command in the console to find the closest village to you.
Alternatively: Find a Cat in a Witch Hut
If you'd like to find a black cat in particular then you'd need to locate a Witch's Hut. These can be sometimes found in swamp biomes which can be kind of hard to locate. If you do find one, however, then look for the hut there and you will find a black cat and a witch! Be careful because the witch isn't friendly and will attack you if you get too close.
Commands can also be used to locate a swamp biome by entering "/locatebiome minecraft:swamp" or you can just do "/locate swamp_hut" to find a Witch Hut specifically.
Feed the Cat some fish to tame
Now that you have found the cat and have your fish, all you need to do is feed the cat and it will be tamed! You will know the cat has been tamed when it gets a collar on it! You can now walk around and the cat should follow you to any future location you head to unless you make it sit or tether it to a fence post with a lead.

How to get the cat to follow you
Your cat will follow you as long as it is tamed! You will sometimes be hard to reach, but your cat should be able to locate you eventually as long as there isn't somewhere that can't be crossed between you both. You will also want to make sure the cat isn't sitting or tethered to a fence.
How to name a cat
If you want to name your cat, you will need to get a name tag. These are unfortunately hard to find because you can't craft them yourself. You can find them in chest loot which can sometimes be found in Dungeons, Mineshafts, Buried Treasure, or Woodland Mansions. You will then need to take it to an Anvil to attach a name to it. Once it has been labeled, you can then use it on your cat to officially give it a name!
