The Minecraft Copper update adds one of the losers of the mob vote, the Copper Golems. Not only are these mobs kind of cute and can change colors, but they're also very helpful in sorting out resources. Here's everything you need to know about how to make and use Copper Golems in Minecraft.
How to Enable Copper Golems in Minecraft
Copper Golems are currently only available as an experimental feature in Minecraft Bedrock Edition. There are different ways to enable these depending on your platform.
Platform | How to Enable |
---|---|
Windows PC & Xbox | Install Minecraft Preview from the Microsoft Store (or the Game Pass app). On PC, launch the Minecraft Launcher, pick Latest Preview, then hit play. |
iOS | Install TestFlight and follow the on‑screen instructions. Beta slots are limited; TestFlight will notify you if a spot opens. |
Android | Open Google Play Store, go to the Minecraft app page, scroll down, and tap Join the Beta. |
Copper Golems are not available in Minecraft Java Edition, but the developers have stated they will be added on Java Snapshots soon.

How to make a Copper Golem
To spawn a Copper Golem, you need to place a Carved Pumpkin or a Jack O Lantern on top of a Copper Block. The Copper Golem will spawn, and the Copper Block will turn into a Copper Chest. You can carve Pumpkins using shears, and Copper is found via mining. You can smelt 9 Copper into Copper Ingots and then place them in the Crafting Table for a Copper Block. So here's what you need to do:
- Mine some Copper Ore, smelt it, and craft a Copper Block.

- Find a Pumpkin and use Shears on it to get a Carved Pumpkin.
- Place the Carved Pumpkin on top of the Copper Block to get a Copper Chest and Copper Golem.

Note that you can actually craft Copper Chests yourself by using 8 Copper Ingots and 1 Normal Chest.

Copper Golem Colors Explained
Your Copper Block can oxidize and change color, and so can your Copper Chests and Copper Golems. If you spawn a Copper Golem on an oxidized Copper Block, it will have a matching color. You can change your Copper Block's color by using an Axe, or you can wax it using Honeycombs. It doesn't change the functionality of your chests or golems and is simply an aesthetic choice.

How to use Copper Golems in Minecraft
Copper Golems will primarily move items from nearby Copper Chests to nearby chests that are marked with or already have a stack of that item. This means they will slowly but surely sort out your chests and fill them up with the same stack of items.

Copper golems visit up to 10 Copper Chests to attempt to remove up to 16 of the first item from each chest. Then, they will visit 10 normal chests and attempt to place those items in chests that already contain matching stacks of the same items.
You can dump several items into Copper Chests, and the Copper Golems will sort them for you. Copper Golems are passive mobs that will make themselves at home around your base. Enemies normally do not attack them, nor do they attack enemies.
