Why MultiVersus is shutting down, explained

Goodbye MultiVersus.

Super Smash Bros. has always been one of my favorite series, and more and more games are joining the platform fighter genre. One that caught my attention was MultiVersus, especially since it let me play as Superman who occupies one of my favorite fighter archetypes as a grappler. However, my joy was short-lived, as MultiVersus announced it would shut down.

Why is MultiVersus ending?

MultiVersus is ending because it was in open beta, an announcement that surprised many fans and players. Despite numerous games remaining open and available, MultiVersus will be shutting its servers down on June 25, 2023. You can stay up-to-date on MultiVersus by following the official MultiVersus Twitter.

Can I still play MultiVersus?

The answer is yes—you can still play MultiVersus once the open beta period ends. However, you can only play the offline modes and cannot play online. This means the core experience of the game will be unavailable. Players will be able to play in the training room and local matches. Additionally, all characters and cosmetics will be available during the offline period of MultiVersus. You can use this time to master the best characters and be ready for MultiVersus' return.

When is MultiVersus coming back?

MultiVersus is planned to relaunch in early 2024, but no exact date was given. Unlocked content will not carry over when MultiVersus releases, but anything purchased, such as unused Gleamium, Battle Pass tokens, character tickets, and more, will carry over. Players can also expect expanded content on launch and numerous reworks. While I am sad MultiVersus is going away, I look forward to what comes in 2024, especially if the Gandalf rumors are true.
