Have you heard about the obscure banana clicker game that's charging up the Steam charts? At close to 270,000 players, it's in the top 5. What you might not have heard is that people are buying banana skin drops for as much as $1,390 USD.
There was speculation last week on why this game became so popular. I, myself, speculated that people saw the skin drops as free money. Back then, the average skin was selling for about a penny, but this week has seen some wild prices in the banana market. On June 7, I posted about 100k people playing the game - it's significantly more now and there are bananas all over the Steam Community page.
Someone sold a Special Golden Banana for just over $1,390 USD. In my previous coverage of this banana epidemic, I mentioned that running the game would hardly pay your power bill. Unless you live in some dystopian nightmare where power is hellishly expensive, I'd guess that this banana could pay for your power for a while.
However, only one has sold. There is another listed at the time of writing, for around $970, and it doesn't seem to be selling. The top requests to buy currently only reach $195, so there's quite a disparity between buyers and sellers at the moment.
Other notable banana skins include the Crypticnana which has sold for over $500; the Diamond Banana which has sold for over $160; and the Cybernana which has sold for around $80.
The big questions are... for how long will this banana madness continue? Will the owner of the $1,390 banana recoup his investment? And how, exactly, will this event impact games on the Steam market in the future?
But the biggest question of all is... who the heck paid £1084.45 GBP ($1,392.15 USD) for a virtual banana?
