Best nature for Lugia in The Indigo Disk Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

The unkillable diving bird returns!

Lugia, the hero of Pokémon 2000 as well as Pokémon Silver, has made a return in The Indigo Disk in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. The interesting thing about Lugia, though, is that it's more of a defensive Pokémon, despite learning huge attacks like Aeroblast and Psychic—therefore, you should want certain natures to get the most out of Lugia.

What are the best natures for Lugia in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Being hindered by a 90 base Special Attack stat, it's really hard to build an offensive Lugia. Most trainers are better off making it defensive while focusing on these natures:

  • Calm (+Sp Def, -Atk)
  • Bold (+Def, -Atk)

The most basic thing you can do with Lugia is make it a sponge for Special offense, which is why Calm nature is listed first. Lugia has 106 HP, 154 Special Defense, and access to the Multiscale ability, which halves the power of moves that hit Lugia at full health. In other words, this Pokémon simply doesn't die.

With that in mind, Lugia does really well with the Heavy Duty Boots item to avoid rocks damage. Lugia can do things like Toxic stalling really well since it learns Roost. It can also use Whirlwind to get rid of set up sweepers like Xerneas or Volcarona.

Bold is specifically the nature you would want for a Calm Mind using Lugia. Since Calm Mind already boosts its Special Defense, you want to have a physically defensive nature for this set. That way, Lugia will end up bulky on both sides as well as strong enough to fire off punishing Aeroblasts, Psychics, and Hydro Pumps.

How to choose the best nature in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Choosing the best nature comes down to deciding which role the Pokémon will be playing. Often times, this is determined by the popular Pokémon that the trainer is likely to face. For instance, there are a lot of strong physical Ice types out there right now (Baxcalibur, Kyurem-Black, Chien Pao), so Lugia users might want to make it physically defensive.
