What is the National Pokedex and why doesn’t Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have one?

Never give up your quest to catch 'em all!

The National Pokédex is an important feature for long-time fans of the series, as it is what allows you to capture and record Pokémon from regions outside of the one you are currently playing in. It is essentially an upgrade to the regional Pokédex that continues the adventure long after you've beaten the game. Unfortunately, if it is excluded from a title, that means that there is a definitive limit to the Pokémon that are available for you.

As of the ninth generation, there are roughly over 1,000 Pokémon across the entire franchise. These include all new regional types and evolutions that were never before seen. So, this bares the question, is the national Pokédex going to be featured in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? The answer is no.

Why isn't the National Pokedex in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

As more Pokémon get announced and the number of entries in the Pokédex increases, the demand for the national Pokédex in every mainline installment becomes more apparent. Unfortunately, the limits of the Nintendo Switch and the sheer amount of Pokémon, new and old, makes it hard to fit them all. While it would be a great addition to the newest Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the job of including each monster as well as their unique attributes such as nature and IV in the game is just too great.

You will, however, be able to utilize support from Pokémon HOME to transfer Pokémon sometime in the near future. This feature will allow you to transfer your Pokémon from Scarlet and Violet to Pokémon HOME as well as trade other Pokémon into the Paldea region.
