How to use Flanagan Grutte – Triangle Strategy Unit Guide

His war scars still sting, but he'll fly over the battlefield.

Flanagan Grutte joins your Triangle Strategy team through character stories if your Utility and Morality Convictions align enough with his a bit later through your first playthrough. When they do align, maybe helping House Wolffort now will grant him some solace from the trauma of being an Aesfrosti soldier thirty years prior. In any case, he will join the cause as a hawk riding tank able to take many a blow with good defense.

Here's how to use Flanagan, also known as the Bloody Shield, former Commander of the Aesfrosti Blackirons.

Battle Strategies for Flanagan Grutte

Flanagan is not only able to access otherwise out-of-reach areas on his hawk, but the animal also saves him from taking fall damage if he's ever pushed from a high place like a cliffside or rooftop. He can take quite a few physical blows and provides great use by infuriating and diverting enemies' attention while inflicting serious damage with Shield Bash. Aerial Assault is also quite the spectacle, as Flanagan can fly high and dive bomb an empty square dealing damage to surrounding foes.

Watch out for Flanagan's main weakness to arrows, which unfortunately come from many an enemy Bowman in Triangle Strategy. However, you can Fortify Flanagan's defense for three turns while sacrificing movement of one square for that duration as well. Alternatively, Shielding Stance will allow Flanagan to take 50 percent of the damage for an ally within a three-square range for two turns—altogether making him an ideal protecting or bodyguarding unit.

Class Promotions and Weapon Upgrades

Flanagan's Weapon Ranks each offers attack damage upgrades that you should purchase, since his attack power isn't among the strongest. Flanagan's magic defense is very low. You'll definitely need to keep a healer nearby in case he gets hit with Spark. Weapon Rank Two, on the other hand, unlocks the useful passive skill Iron Stance, which "grants immunity to being knocked back"—extremely useful to have when so many enemy Shieldbearers and Pikemen can do just that.

When you upgrade Flanagan to weapon rank three and promote him to the Elite class of Winguard, he'll gain the impressive Rampart ability. This will lower damage sustained by adjacent allies, effectively spreading his high defense capabilities to his team at large.

You can use Flanagan best when you have multiple units embroiled in close hand-to-hand with a mass of foes. Equip him with a couple of well-picked magic defense-enhancing accessories, then use his amazing defensive powers to tough it out for the allies who, in turn, should have his back.
