To find Generators in Project Zomboid, you will need to search Garages, Warehouses, and Self Storage facilities. Residential homes like the ones in Rosewood and the Storage facility outside of Riverside are good places to check.Â
You can also find numerous Warehouses all across the map, and to find these Warehouses, we recommend using the official map tool.
However, finding a Generator is easier said than done, as they are pretty rare in the game. To cut down on your search for Generators, we recommend starting your search in Residential home areas that have Garages. Doing so is the easiest way to find a Generator.

Once you find a Generator, mark it on your map by pressing M and then using the map tools so that you can find it again. If you'd rather move the Generator immediately, you will need to have at least 40 storage spaces cleared.Â
Picking up the Generator will also encumber your character due to its heavy weight. Because of this, we recommend using a vehicle to move the Generator to another location.
If you don't have a vehicle, the best thing you can do is mark it on the map using the map tools. That way, you will be able to find it again once you have a set of wheels and a base set up.
But before you can use map tools to mark locations on your map, you will need to grab a pen or pencil. You can find pens and pencils in most homes and schools. Getting one allows you to add text and icons to your map.Â
How to use a Generator in Project Zomboid
To use a Generator in Project Zomboid, you will need to be either an Electrician or read the How to use Generators Skill Magazine.
The first option requires you to pick the Electrician occupation at the start of the game, while the second requires you to find the Skill Magazine. So, if you are not an Electrician, you will need to go with the Skill Magazine option.
Luckily, finding skill books is pretty easy. We recommend looking in Mailboxes, Libraries, and Bookcases. That said, once you have the proper know-how, you will be able to use Generators in Project Zomboid to power your base in the game.Â
To connect a Generator to your base, place it nearby, but don't place it inside your base. Placing a Generator inside your base will cause your character to lose health due to the Generator's exhaust fumes.
Because of this, placing the Generator outside and close to the base is your best option. After placing the Generator, you will need to right-click the Generator and click Connect Generator.Â
Afterward, the Generator will power your base, but to keep the Generator running, you will need to gather Fuel. You can gather Fuel with a Gas Can and fill it by either siphoning gas from cars or going to a Gas Station and filling it via a Fuel Pump.
