First and foremost, the Hard Mode is not a toggle button that players can use while creating a party or starting a game. Instead, it is linked to the Corruption System and the Scientific Outpost, which are now a core feature of the game.

Basically, when you start, you can find the permanent Scientific Outpost on the map as a white rock-like marker. Use the map and reach the Outpost. Upon arrival, go towards the bottom of the building where you can find a single lever or multiple levers, depending on the number of players on the server. These levers act like a voting system to start the Hard Mode. If you and all the players pull the lever, Corruption or Hard Mode will begin on Day 3.

Once Hard Mode begins, the Corruption Level will be displayed on the screen inside the Scientific Outpost, along with the Debuffs. The objective is to maintain the Corruption level as low as possible while handling the Debuffs. Currently, there are four types of Debuffs, and you can get inflicted by any 3 of them during a game.

  • Hungry Deer
  • Passive Healing
  • Cultist Waves
  • Food Rot Spores

So, how do you control the Corruption Level? Well, there are many ways to do that, and I have listed the best ones below.

  • Eliminate the Corrupted Animals and chop down all Corrupted Trees around the map.
  • Open the Hard Mode Chest and use the Research Monitor Blueprint to build a banner in your base to monitor the corruption level easily. Also, ensure you use the Bandages, Medkit, and other items with your group.
  • Identify Rift openings and monitor the area around them, as Corruption often spreads quickly in their vicinity.
