How to turn on voice chat on Roblox

To unlock the voice chat option on Roblox, you must complete several verification procedures. Follow the steps on how to enable voice chat for experiences. However, if you want more privacy, you'd want to know how to appear offline on Roblox.

  1. Verify that you're 13+ by providing your ID.
  2. Verify your phone number.
  3. Agree to voice chat rules.
  4. Enable the voice feature on Roblox.

Access the Roblox website or app to verify your age and head to the Settings menu. Upon opening this menu, you should automatically be on the Account Info page, where your birthday should be listed. Assuming you haven't already verified your age in the past, you should see a button that says "Verify My Age." Click this to begin the age verification process.

How to scan ID to confirm your age on Roblox

If you're on a desktop, a QR code will appear that you'll need to scan with a mobile device; using the Roblox app, you'll automatically be prompted to prepare your ID. You can then simply snap a photo of your driver's license, passport, or ID card, which will be scanned by Roblox's photo processor for authentication purposes.

After this scan, users will be asked to take selfies to prove "liveness" and "likeness." Photos from a camera roll will not be allowed due to their more static nature, so be prepared to get your photo face on! Roblox uses "liveness" to ensure that you're a living and breathing person, as silly as that may sound, and "likeness" to verify that you are the same person who appears in your submitted picture. This entire photo shoot process shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

  1. Once you've verified your age, voice chat can be toggled on and off within the Settings menu.
  2. From Settings, locate the Privacy tab from the menu on the left to open your privacy options.
  3. Under the Microphone and Camera Input, you should see the Use microphone to chat with voice option.
  4. Clicking this button will toggle voice chat ON. When done, the button will turn gray to green. If you wish to disable voice chat, switch to OFF.
  5. Currently, there doesn't appear to be a way to toggle voice chat on PlayStation and Xbox, so you'll need access to the Roblox app or website to do so.

What are the Roblox voice chat rules?

Roblox is very strict about the misuse of voice chat, so make sure to follow rules of conduct to avoid being banned from the platform. On Sept. 19, 2023, Roblox acquired the program Speechly, an AI tool that can detect, recognize, and interpret spoken language as it's being used. With Speechly, Roblox hopes to create a fully AI moderation system that will live monitor voice chat across the platform and detect activity that breaks Roblox's ToS. When this activity is detected, the offending player will receive a warning or ban, depending on the determined severity of their offense.

Roblox voice chat rules

Though there hasn't been an official statement regarding Roblox's voice chat rules, and AI moderation is far from fully integrated, I assume they'll resemble the following guidelines:

  • No swearing
  • No discussion of dating
  • No offensive comments/bullying
  • No angry yelling (Yep, you read that right; it was mentioned at RDC 2023 that Roblox's voice-moderating AI would detect the tone of voice used and warn offending users accordingly)

How to use voice chat in Roblox games

Whether you view it as unfortunate or not, not every Roblox experience will feature voice chat compatibility—the decision is entirely up to the individual game developers as to whether or not they want to allow it. If you're in an experience that does enable voice chat, you can toggle it on or off by clicking the microphone icon above your avatar's head or by using Roblox's in-game Settings menu. You can see whether or not an experience allows voice chat by checking their About page.
