Users must meet the requirements.

On Nov. 8, 2021, Roblox officially released its spacial voice chat feature to everyone over the age of 13 who had successfully completed their age verification process. Since then, this feature, which was originally created and developed as a beta in Feb. 2021, has taken the platform by storm, and users across the world have become connected through virtual chatting. To find out how you can join the conversation on Roblox, continue reading the brief guide below.

How to get voice chat on Roblox

In order to unlock the ability to use voice chat on Roblox, you'll need to complete the following steps, which are explained in more detail after this list:

  • Verify that you're 13+
  • Agree to following the voice chat rules
  • Enable the feature
  • Start chatting

How to verify your age on Roblox

To verify your age, access the Roblox website or app and head to the Settings menu. Upon opening this menu, you should automatically be on the Account Info page, where your birthday should be listed. Assuming you haven't already verified your age in the past, you should see a button that says Verify My Age—click this to begin the age verification process. If you're on desktop, a QR code will appear that you'll need to scan with a mobile device; if you're using the Roblox app, you'll automatically be prompted to prepare your ID. Users can then simply snap a photo of their driver's license, passport, or ID card, which will then be scanned by Roblox's photo processor for authentication purposes.

After this scan is complete, users will be asked to take selfie in order to prove "liveness" and "likeness". Photos from a camera roll will not be allowed due to their more static nature, so be prepared to get your photo face on! Roblox uses "liveness" to ensure that you're a living and breathing person, as silly as that may sound, and "likeness" to verify that you are the same person who appears in your submitted picture. This entire photoshoot process shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

How to enable voice chat in Roblox

Once you've verified your age, voice chat can be toggled on and off within the Settings menu. From Settings, locate the Privacy tab from the menu on the left to open your privacy options. Under the heading Beta Features, you should see the text Enable voice chat and a small button. Clicking this button will toggle voice chat on—when done the button will turn from gray to green. At the moment, there doesn't appear to be a way to toggle voice chat from an Xbox—so you'll need to have access to the Roblox app or website in order to turn it on or off.

What are the Roblox voice chat rules?

When voice chat was first released, there were no rules; it was essentially the wild west. None of the content that was being spoken by players was monitored live, so there was inevitably an influx of swearing, racist remarks, sexist remarks, and just overall inappropriate language being used across the platform. Now, however, it seems Roblox has overcompensated for its mistake, as it's become alarmingly common for a player to receive a voice chat ban at random, despite not breaking any of Roblox's ToS.

On Sept. 19, 2023, it was announced that Roblox had acquired the program Speechly, which is essentially an AI tool that can detect, recognize, and interpret spoken language as it's being used. With Speechly, Roblox hopes to create a fully-AI moderation system that will live monitor voice chat across the platform and detect activity that breaks Roblox's ToS. When this activity is detected, the offending player will receive a warning or ban, depending on the determined severity of their offense.

Though there hasn't been an official statement regarding Roblox's voice chat rules, and AI moderation is far from fully integrated, I assume they'll resemble the following guidelines:

  • No swearing
  • No discussion of dating
  • No offensive comments/bullying
  • No yelling angrily (Yep, you read that right, it was mentioned at RDC 2023 that Roblox's voice-moderating AI will be able to detect the tone of voice used, and will warn offending users accordingly)

How to use voice chat in Roblox games

Whether you view it as unfortunate or not, not every Roblox experience will feature voice chat compatibility—the decision is completely up the individual game developers as to whether or not they want to allow it. If you're in an experience that does allow voice chat, you can toggle it on or off by clicking the microphone icon above your avatar's head, or by using Roblox's in-game Settings menu. You can see whether or not an experience allows voice chat by checking their About page.
