Is Roblox Shutting Down in 2020?

The short answer is.... NO, of course it isn't shutting down. To go into a bit more detail.... Roblox is as large as it has ever been, and has reportedly over 115 million active players and receives more than 1.5 billion hours of monthly engagement. As a company it is valued at $4 Billion and they've also fairly recently raised $150 million in funding, which would help any "server issues" they might be having as claimed in the rumor. They've also teamed up with Disney and DC to put out themed events based on major properties.

So, where did this whole rumor come from? Well, it looks like an article was posted on the prank website React2424. The site is specifically made so you can create fake news articles and share them on the internet. This post included the following text as the reason for why Roblox was going to shut down:

"Because of the population, the Roblox servers will shut down on March 22, 2020. It was a fun time, but we make less money now and we can’t hold the servers. We don’t have the money to keep them up."

We clearly know that Roblox did not shutdown in March 2020, so we know this was completely false. Roblox itself has even confirmed this in early January 2020:

When it comes to the internet, you have to be skeptical about everything you read. This is especially the case when it comes to companies that are worth billions of dollars. That goes for Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite! There's no chance that these huge games will be shutting down anytime soon, so don't worry about your accounts and cosmetics that you've compiled over the years. You are safe to continue to play the game without worrying about losing all of your hard work.
