Complete Sea of Stars Fishing Guide – All Fishing Locations, How to fish, & more!

It's a good challenge, right?

Everyone knows that truly good RPGs are those with a fishing mechanic, and Sea of Stars is no different. However, unlike most RPGs, Sea of Stars never holds your hand at any point in the game. They won’t even teach you how to fish correctly! With vague button controls and a line that snaps every three seconds as hint, here’s everything you need to know about fishing in Sea of Stars.

How to fish properly in Sea of Stars

Once you’ve figured out what you and should not be doing in this activity, fishing in Sea of Stars is pretty easy!

  1. First, throw your line to an area with moving shadows. If you’re aiming to capture a certain sea creature, pay attention to their shape. Press whatever your “Confirm” key is to lower your hook/lure.
  2. If you threw the line too far, just push your Reel button to bring it back. A nearby shadow will grab onto your hook. Now’s the time to wrestle with it!
  3. To reel in your catch, hold the Reel key/button.
  4. As you reel it in, move the hook left and right to keep your catch in that middle current (see photo below). Do NOT Reel your catch unless it’s within the current, or your line will snap!

Sometimes, the fish will also jump out of the water. That’s your opportunity to stun it! Have a quick press of your Reel button to slap it out of the air.

How to upgrade your fishing gear

If you think a fishing spot is too difficult for you, remember where it is and come back when you've received better gear. You can do so roughly 10 to 15 hours in Mirth once you've invited a great fisherman over and have caught enough species. It's a bit of a spoiler, so I'll stop there for now.

All fishing locations in Sea of Stars

There are allegedly 23 water species to discover in Sea of Stars—a master fisherman said so! You only need to catch the creature once to add it to your collection. Remember that you can open your map in the overworld anytime to check the names of the islands you've already visited.

The reward for completing this list is a Flimsy Hammer, which you can use to view Sea of Stars' final secret.
