How To Become a Mermaid in The Sims 4 (& How to Change Back)

Because land is overrated...

Thanks to the Island Living expansion pack, Merfolk can finally live alongside fellow Sims. Just like the wizarding world that came long before it, anyone who chooses to enter the occult life state can walk, swim, or roam freely. Being a mermaid, though, does have its fair share of perks, which you'll come to learn as you make the fishy transformation.

There are two ways to make a mermaid in The Sims 4:

  • Create a Sim
    • Head to the Create a Sim suite, select Add Occult Sim, and then Add Mermaid.
  • Consuming Mermadic Kelp
    • Effectively transforms a regular Sim into a mermaid.

To become a mermaid, you will need to acquire Mermadic Kelp. The easiest way to get this is to purchase it from the Rewards Store for 500 Satisfaction Points. You can also obtain it through fishing, diving, and exploring the cave in Mua Pel'am.

Once you are ready to make the change, consume the Mermadic Kelp, and then enter the ocean. You will only have 24 hours to go through with the transition, otherwise your Sim will remain human.

Should you want to return to your human form, you will need to consume two pieces of Mermadic Kelp. Be aware that doing this will strip any abilities you had as a mermaid.
