Tails first appeared in Sonic: The Hedgehog 2. The lead designer of Tails, Yasushi Yamaguchi, intended Tails to look like a five-year-old fox. However, the developers changed Tails' age to eight upon the official release of the sequel, meaning that he's nearly half Sonic's age.

If we're to look at it in real-time, Sega released the first Sonic game on June 23, 1991, and its sequel on November 21, 1992. Tail's birthday is on October 6, 1984, making him roughly six years old during the events of Sonic: The Hedgehog.

  1. During the early design stages of Tails, Yamaguchi initially designed his eyes to have an all-black appearance, which would have been a scary sight.
  2. Tails has three solo games wherein he is the lead protagonist. First is Tails' Skypatrol, followed by Tails Adventure, and lastly, Tails and the Music Maker.
  3. In the unreleased game Sonic X-treme, Tails was a playable character that players could control in first-person flight mode.
  4. Sonic first ignored Tails during their time on West Side Island. Sonic only acknowledged Tails when he could keep up with the blue speedster.
  5. Tails has the mechanical prowess that rivals Dr. Eggman's ability. Tails would go on to invent mechanical gadgets for the gang to use.
