How to build Defensive Wall Gates in Sons of the Forest

Who needs gates anyway, right?

Building defensive structures is an essential survival component in Sons of the Forest. You will first make a simple tarp shelter to satisfy your current needs, but optimal resource usage demands you set up a more permanent base of operations. Safety will also play an essential role since cannibal attacks will become more frequent the more time you spend on the island. Building a defensive wall will become extremely useful. But every wall needs a gate, and the absence of a wall gate from the build menu has left players wondering what to do.

How to put gates on your defensive wall in Sons of the Forest

Making defensive gates on your wall is really simple; just follow the instructions below.

Screenshot by Pro Game Guides
  • Make a straight wall section that is five logs long.
  • Pick up a log and stand right where you want your wall gate to be.
  • When the game prompts you with a white diagonal outline, simply left-click with your mouse to install a single plank.

Doing so will create a gate on your defensive walls. Press E on your keyboard to open and close the gate when you see a prompt. This gate is the best way to ensure the safety of your base while making it easy for you to enter and exit your compound.

Gate wall alternatives in Sons of the Forest

Two viable alternatives exist to building a gate in Sons of the Forest:

  • Placing a log wall
  • Building a door

Building a wall of horizontal logs is a safe alternative to a defensive gate. Follow these steps to build it:

  • Place a horizontal log on the ground you want your improvised gate to be on.
  • Make a mental note of where the log is, then remove it.
  • Remove the vertical logs, making space for the horizontal wall.
  • Place the horizontal log back on the ground where it previously was. If you do everything correctly, you will have a minimal gap between the vertical wall logs and the log acting as a gate.
  • Stack the rest of the logs onto the horizontal one. A good height would be seven logs.

This method requires you to remove horizontal logs every time you want to enter the base, making the whole process tedious. It's not a perfect solution by any means, but it's the safest option you have at the moment.

Building a wall door is a similar process. Follow the steps below:

  • Place a horizontal log on the ground you want your gate door to be on.
  • Make a mental note of where the log is, then remove it.
  • Remove the vertical logs, making space for the horizontal wall.
  • Place the horizontal log back on the ground where it previously was. Make a wall that's seven logs high.

  • Chop out pieces of logs, starting with the second from the top.
  • Once you are done, take two whole logs to build a door.
  • Approach the hole and press the left click at the prompt to make planks.
  • Place planks into the hole.

This process will create a part of the wall normally used for building a custom house. I recommend obtaining the Modern Axe for this job (to save time building). You can freely enter and exit your walled compound, making it more aesthetically pleasing. The developers have added a door lock feature, so you won't have to fear cannibals barging through in the middle of the night.
