To be successful in battles, you need to understand how the AP gauge work in Star Ocean: The Divine Force. You'll need higher AP to utilize chain combos efficiently, but how to get more? As you've noticed, your default AP is only five.

You need to surprise and blindside enemies to get more, as they'll increase your AP to 15. If you change character during combat, your increased max AP will transfer over to them. Be careful, as the expanded limit will be reduced if you take damage or are knocked down. Remember that characters you don't control can't have more than 5 AP.
