Who is the Mysterious Captain in Starfield?

As you're exploring the Settled Systems in Starfield, you may be hailed by a certain mysterious figure. She gives no clear answer to anything you may ask, and the answers she does have are cryptic at best. Odds are, your meeting with this entity ended with nothing gained or lost, but just who is the Mysterious Captain? Well, I've got some details for you, some concrete and others speculation.

Starfield - The Mysterious Captain, Explained

Bethesda loves adding mystery when it comes to their characters, and Starfield's Mysterious Captain is no exception. So who exactly is this Mysterious Captain? As it turns out, she's some sort of multi-dimensional trader who comes to watch the events of your dimension play out. Specifically, she's most curious about your involvement.

During your first meeting with the Mysterious Captain, she reveals how she's happy to see you and that she has a particular set of rules she must abide by. If you ask her who she is, she refuses to identify herself but continues to encourage you to progress and to be careful. There are many other questions you can ask her, but none of her answers reveal much. Eventually, she'll thank you for your time and grav jump away. It's obvious from the first exchange that the Mysterious Captain is not part of any prior faction or group you've met. What's most interesting, however, is how omnipotent she seems during conversation.

After the Captain leaves, you probably won't see her again until starting New Game Plus. By this point, you would already have met members of the Starborn, a faction of dimension hoppers. Without spoiling the plot too much, during your second meeting the Mysterious Captain will reveal that she is also Starborn and has grown tired of dimension-hopping. Instead, she's chosen to settle down for a time and become a trader.

If you offer to trade, you'll see that her wares are full of rare items and exotic gear. Feel free to purchase what you want, but know that after this encounter we aren't sure exactly when or where she'll show up again. I've only encountered her twice so far, and haven't seen her since. However, a friend of mine has seen her a third time in the Kryx System, which does confirm that she can appear beyond the second sighting, likely with even more crazy gear on offer. Mysterious indeed.
