Preparing to fight Kraken

Before taking on Kraken, you’ll want to be prepared to exploit his weakness—lightning. Setting either the Black Mage or Sage as one of your Jobs will give you access to powerful thunder magic. Choosing a secondary Job that utilizes either fists or daggers will allow for the use of swift attacks to quickly recharge MP.

The Mission Levels range from 74 to 92 for both the Main and Side Mission versions of the Kraken fight, so equip gear of at least an equal level before heading in to face him. Additionally, if you’ve unlocked the option to Change Special Effects through the Smithy, be sure to give your weapons and armor at least a few of the following Equipment Effects before heading into battle:

  • Imbue Lightning
  • Lightning Damage Dealt
  • Lightning Break Damage Dealt
  • Magic Damage Dealt
  • Magic Break Damage Dealt
  • Enemy Weakness Damage Dealt
  • Enemy Weakness Break Damage Dealt
  • Physical Damage Taken
  • Water Resistance
  • MP Recovery Rate with Normal Attacks
  • Action Ability MP Cost

Once your party’s Jobs and gear have been decided, head to the Sunken Shrine area on the World Map to confront the Fiend of Water.

Kraken's attacks and abilities

Kraken relies on his speed to deliver a flurry of water and physical attacks during combat, preferring to get up close and personal with his prey. Due to this, Kraken has the potential to overwhelm your party if you aren't careful—attacks like Rush or Tentacle Crush allow him to quickly cross the arena, closing the distance between himself and Jack. The attacks Kraken will use during battle are as follows:

    • Kraken delivers five swipes to any player directly in front of him. This attack can be blocked normally or can be avoided by dodging.
  • Rush
    • Kraken drops down to all fours and quickly charges toward a player. This attack can be partially blocked or can be avoided by dodging.
  • Spinning Blast
    • Kraken spins around, hitting nearby players with his tentacles. This attack can be partially blocked or can be avoided by dodging.
  • Nova Splash
    • Kraken spins around, shooting out orbs of water in every direction. This attack can be partially blocked or can be avoided by dodging.
  • Water Laser
    • Kraken drops to all fours, firing a beam of water in a horizontal line across the ground directly in front of him. This attack can be partially blocked or can be avoided by dodging.
  • Tsunami
    • Kraken leaps into the water, swimming for a short while before leaping back onto the platform and delivering an Area-of-Effect water-based attack to nearby players. This attack can be avoided by dodging.
  • Tidal Tremor
    • Kraken cause a spire of water to erupt from the ground, dealing Area-of-Effect water damage. This attack can be partially blocked or can be avoided by dodging.
  • Inky Envy
    • Kraken fires off multiple ink-filled orbs in a horizontal line toward the ground directly in front of him. This attack can be partially blocked or can be avoided by dodging.
  • Tentacle Crush
    • Kraken performs a front flip, leaping toward a player in an attempt to crush them. This attack hits twice. The attack cannot be blocked and should be avoided by dodging.
  • Squish

How to beat Kraken

The key to fighting Kraken is keeping your distance by dashing and dodging, all while using Thunder magic. To start out the battle, switch to your Black Mage or Sage Job and hit Kraken with Thundaga until you've run out of MP. From there, initiate both of your ally's resonance states, causing them to act as a distraction by using their abilities on Kraken more aggressively.

While Kraken is preoccupied with attacking your teammates, hit him with Normal Attacks to recover your MP, then distance yourself from Kraken once again before casting Thundaga. Additionally, if your weapon has the Imbue Lightning equipment effect, each Normal Attack will exploit Kraken's weakness to lightning and lower his break gauge.

Simply continue that cycle of casting, using resonances and recovering MP, then casting again. If Kraken begins to advance toward you, lead him to one of the four generators located around the arena. These generators will spread electricity through the arena when hit, temporarily stunning the Fiend and giving you the chance to recover MP.

The battle will enter its second phase upon Kraken's health being lowered to the halfway mark, at which point he'll lose the ability to use Resentful Embrace and begin to occasionally use Tsunami. Kraken's other attacks and mechanics will remain the same for the rest of the fight, however, so continue using Thundaga magic and lightning-imbued Normal Attacks to chip away at his break gauge. Just keep your wits about you and you'll be sure to take down this watery Fiend in no time!
