When did Subnautica 2 Early Access release?

Subnautica 2 launched in Early Access on May 14, 2026. The Early Access version is available on PC and Xbox Series X|S, letting players try the sequel while Unknown Worlds continues adding new systems, content, and improvements over time.

Like the first Subnautica, the sequel is being developed through Early Access, which means the current version is playable but not finished. Players should expect bug fixes, balance changes, performance updates, and larger content expansions throughout development.

What platforms is Subnautica 2 Early Access on?

Subnautica 2 Early Access is available on PC and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, players can access the game through Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Xbox app for Windows PC. Xbox players can play through Xbox Game Preview.

Subnautica 2 is also available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions are not available during Early Access, and Unknown Worlds has not confirmed release dates for those platforms.

Does Subnautica 2 have multiplayer and co-op?

Yes, Subnautica 2 supports online co-op multiplayer for up to four players. You can still play the game solo, but the sequel now lets you explore, gather resources, build bases, and survive with friends.

Co-op is already playable in Early Access, but some multiplayer features are still being improved. Players can host a new multiplayer world or convert a single-player save into a multiplayer save. However, guest players start fresh when joining another player's world, and there is currently no full revive system for downed players.

Proximity voice chat, player emotes, player trading, additional character customization, and a revive system are planned for a future co-op-focused update. For now, treat those as upcoming roadmap features rather than launch features.

Subnautica 2 Early Access roadmap and upcoming updates

Unknown Worlds has shared its first Early Access roadmap for Subnautica 2. The roadmap does not include exact release dates for each update yet, but it does show what the developers plan to improve after launch.

Early Access 1.1 update

The first planned update is focused mostly on quality-of-life improvements. Expected changes include improvements to the biomods system, more passive biomod slots, better blight encounters, improved wreck gameplay, smoother vehicle docking and base fabrication, more PDA data entries, voice log priority changes, a storage cache, and the ability to sprint inside bases.

Early Access 1.2 co-op update

The second planned update is focused on multiplayer and co-op improvements. Planned additions include HUD improvements, better base-building tools, improved recipe pinning, proximity voice chat, player emotes, player trading, avatar customization options, and a player revive system.

Future Subnautica 2 updates

After the first two Early Access updates, Unknown Worlds plans to expand Subnautica 2 with larger content additions. Future updates are expected to add new world regions, biomes, creatures, resources, tools, vehicles, submersibles, and more story content.

Since Subnautica 2 is still in Early Access, the roadmap can change based on player feedback. The developers also plan to release bug fixes, balance tuning, optimizations, and smaller updates between larger content drops.

Is Subnautica 2 on Game Pass?

Yes, Subnautica 2 is available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass during Early Access. This means Game Pass subscribers can play the Game Preview version without buying the game separately.

Does Subnautica 2 have crossplay?

Yes, Subnautica 2 supports crossplay between PC and Xbox. This allows players across the Early Access platforms to explore together in online co-op.

Is Subnautica 2 coming to PlayStation or Switch?

Subnautica 2 is not available on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch during Early Access. The game is currently focused on PC and Xbox Series X|S, and Unknown Worlds has not confirmed PlayStation or Switch release dates.

The first Subnautica eventually came to more platforms, so it is possible Subnautica 2 could expand later. However, until there is an official announcement, players should not treat PS5 or Switch versions as confirmed.

How long will Subnautica 2 stay in Early Access?

Unknown Worlds has not given a final full-release date for Subnautica 2. The Early Access period is expected to last a long time while the team adds more biomes, creatures, craftables, story content, features, and polish.

Because the roadmap does not include exact update dates yet, players should treat each roadmap item as a planned feature rather than a guaranteed release window.

Is Subnautica 2 set in the same world?

No, Subnautica 2 takes place on a new alien ocean world. That means players can expect new biomes, new creatures, new dangers, and a new story rather than another trip through the exact same setting from the first game.

Will Subnautica 2 have character customization?

Subnautica 2 has limited character options in Early Access, with more customization planned for future updates. The roadmap specifically points to additional avatar customization as part of the co-op-focused Early Access 1.2 update.

Will Subnautica 2 have VR or mod support?

There are currently no confirmed Early Access plans for official VR support or official mod support in Subnautica 2. This could change later in development, but neither feature should be treated as confirmed right now.

Subnautica 2 in-game verification notes

Based on current official and competitor coverage, these are the main details players should double-check in-game because they may change during Early Access:

  • Co-op save behavior: Multiplayer can be hosted from new worlds or converted single-player saves, but guest-player progress and inventory behavior may feel different from other survival games.
  • Revives: A player revive system is planned for a future co-op update, but current multiplayer coverage indicates it is not fully available yet.
  • Voice chat: Proximity voice chat is planned for the Early Access 1.2 co-op update, so it should not be listed as a current launch feature.
  • Character customization: More avatar customization is planned, but current Early Access options are limited.
  • Roadmap timing: Unknown Worlds has not given exact dates for EA 1.1, EA 1.2, or larger future content updates.
  • Platform support: PC and Xbox Series X|S are live now, while PlayStation and Switch versions are not confirmed for Early Access.
