Tunic is an action-adventure game that takes inspiration from The Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls series. You control a small fox on a large epic tale to uncover the secrets of the world. But you will face enemies along the way and potentially fall in battle. This means you will need to respawn at a checkpoint.
To set your checkpoint in Tunic, you must seek out and interact with statues. These statues are kneeling in front of a fire. The fire will light when you interact with the statue, and the day will pass. This will set a checkpoint at the statue so that you respawn at this spot when you die.

What do statues do in Tunic?
When you rest at a statue, you will be fully healed and your potions will recharge. But the enemies that you have killed will also respawn. This means that you risk facing the enemies that put you in danger every time you rest.
This checkpoint system is similar to Dark Soul's bonfires. So as you are exploring Tunic, keep an eye out for these statues and consider whether or not you should rest at them.
