Is Warcraft coming to mobile?

Warcraft III: Redialed?

Warcraft is one of the most important intellectual properties (IPs) that Blizzard has ever created. Alongside the Warcraft RTS series, the Warcraft universe is also the setting for both World of Warcraft and Hearthstone.

However, the game hasn’t seen a new entry to the mainline series for years, apart from the rebooted Warcraft III: Reforged. But a recent earnings report has shown that a Warcraft game for mobile may be in development.

In their Fourth-Quarter and 2020 Financial Results press release, Activision Blizzard reported that “Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.” This is all but confirms that a new Warcraft game for mobile is in development.

Warcraft on iOS and Android?

With the press release indicating that there’s a mobile Warcraft “experience” in the works, signs point to it being on both major mobile platforms. That means iOS and Android.

Blizzard’s two biggest mobile games, Hearthstone and Diablo Immortal, both run on iOS and Android. So it’s expected any Warcraft game would also be usable on both.

However, even with the report, there’s no prospective date for the release and no solid details on the game. What’s more, with the company currently only describing it as “content” and “experiences” it’s hard to identify exactly what form this Warcraft game will take. Will it be an RTS or something new and adapted directly to mobile?
