Halberdier is the fourth specialization option available for a Spearman in Wartales. It only becomes available once you have completed the Eye for an Eye quest which you can begin in the church in Cortia (see map above) in the County of Arthes

To complete this quest you must first fight through all of the opponents in Arthes Harbor Arena. You'll find the arena by going through Shipwreck Cavern and you don’t need the quest before you take on the arena. Once you’ve bested everyone in the arena, go to the church and talk to the NPCs there to be taught this specialization option.

My favorite Halberdier build creates an excellent support unit that can buff allies while dishing out big damage. They’re mobile and can easily disengage from combat without penalty, helping them move into the best strategic buffing position.

LevelSkill NameDescription
2Valorous Support(Passive) Every time this unit ends its turn next to an ally and is not engaged in combat, you gain 1 Valour Point.
3HalberdierThis specialty allows you to wear medium armor, as with all Spearman specialties. You receive the Controlled Whirlwind ability (cost 1 Valour Point to use) which damages all units in an area around the unit and knocks them back 2 meters. The damage is greatly increased for each unit in the target area.
5Inspired Presence(Passive) At the end of this unit's turn, they grant Deflection (damage taken by the next attack reduced by 70 percent) to all adjacent allies that are engaged in combat.
8Preparedness(Passive) If the unit ends its turn while not engaged in combat it gains Fury (the damage of their next attack is increased by 50 percent).
10Unstoppable(Passive) The unit can pass through enemy units during their movement.
12Class SpecializationThis allows you to take an earlier skill you passed over. I suggest Alacrity: This unit has a 35 percent chance to dodge all ranged and AOE attacks.

How to play Halberdier in Wartales

The key to making the Halberdier work well is flexibility, which you’ll get from starting their turn disengaged. This is made much easier once you get Unstoppable at level 10. Before then, with a good investment in movement, you should still be able to place yourself out of harm's way (preferably behind some tanks).  This will allow you and your allies to benefit from Valorous Support, Inspired Presence, and Preparedness.

At the start of your turn, move to a position in the middle of a group of enemies (if possible) and use Controlled Whirlwind to deal out some damage. Move close (but not adjacent to an enemy that’s on the way to where you want to finish the turn) and use your standard attack on them (alongside any weapon abilities), and then move close to allies to buff them with your passives.

Best Halberdier Equipment in Wartales

There are two excellent Legendary Weapons you can pick up on your travels that are perfect for any Halberdier.

  • Belerion’s Spear: All standard attacks apply Destabiliation to the targets for 1 Round. This reduces their Guard to 0, and so is excellent for making well-armored units vulnerable. Available as part of the Belerion Archipelago story quest.
  • Huroun’s Partisan: Hits add Marks to the targets, either allowing an Attack of Opportunity (Mark of Narses) or gaining your part 2 Valour Points (Mark of Horoun). As you’ll be hitting multiple targets whenever possible, this is a strong choice. Available from Ludern Tomb.
  • Liberator: This makes standard attacks force opponents to disengage. It’s probably best suited for other Spearman specializations, but it has the advantage of being relatively easy to obtain. Available after defeating Tracker Bionn in Ludern.

Best Halberdier Attributes in Wartales

As part of the Spearman class, the Halberdier can ignore Dexterity (largely used to increase ranged damage) and concentrate on the other stats.

  1. Strength: Every point of Strength they take will add more bite to their Controlled Whirlwind attack, as well as any other damage they deal. It also increases their Critical Damage.
  2. Movement: The key to a Halberdier’s success is being in the right place to deal damage, and then moving to a great spot to buff allies at the end of their turn. The further they can move, the more effective they will be.
  3. Constitution: Constitution adds Health Points so keep it as high as you feel necessary for your level. They should be able to avoid most damage but need to have enough health to survive a strong attack from a DPS. Their Constitution also raises Carrying Capacity which is never a bad thing for the party.
  4. Willpower: Edge this up to 15 relatively quickly as possible as this allows them to survive the first time they would die in combat. It also keeps them from running in encounters with Nightmares.
  5. Critical Hit: I don’t concentrate on crits with a Halberdier, but it is a valid strategy. Once you’re in bigger battles you should be able to target multiple enemies often, so more hits means more chances of crits.
