Should you use the Onyx Ring in WoW Dragonflight?

A powerful ring...or a dud?

WoW Dragonflight's 10.0.7 update re-introduced the expansive Forbidden Reach zone to the game. Prior to this update, it was only accessible to new Dracthyr characters, and only during their prologue questline. With the update, the zone came with a slew of new content to mess around with, including a special ring that allows for some pretty extensive customization. However, you may be wondering if getting and using this ring is worth the time. Well, I've upgraded the ring to a pretty high item level and can answer this question for you. Here's whether or not you should use the Onyx Ring in Dragonflight.

Is it worth using the Onyx Ring in WoW Dragonflight?

Unfortunately, there is no short answer to this question, as it's all contextual. The Onyx Ring begins its life at a high item level of 405, but it does not come with any other stat but stamina. From an itemization perspective, this is extraordinarily useless. However, the usefulness of this ring comes into play in how you kit it out with the special socket gems that you can obtain from the new Forbidden Reach zone.

These special gems, called Primordial Stones, can provide a slew of powerful effects that can largely stack with each other. Since it is allowed three of these types of gems, you can make the Onyx Ring a competitive option through its proc-based buffs and mechanics. To do this, though, requires quite a bit of grinding at the Forbidden Reach. The gems come from a few different activities there, but all require time and effort. The gems will also need be to upgraded for the Onyx Ring to reach its maximum potential, and this to will take additional time. Finally, the gems that drop are all RNG-based, so it is possible you may not get the set of gems you want when you want them.

It is for these reasons that the Onyx Ring may not be the best option for you to use. Mythic Plus and Raids provide fully functional rings at the highest item level currently possible in Dragonflight, all without the extra grind necessary. Of course, these rings still must drop for you, and that is based on RNG, but once they do, you're done after throwing on an enchant.

If you have already been active in high-level Mythic Plus or Mythic Raiding, we don't recommend grinding for the Onyx Ring. At its best, it is a strong side-grade, meaning that unless you just want to grind extra, it isn't worth it for players already heavy into Dragonflight's endgame scene. If you've not been doing Dragonfllight's endgame, or you're trying to gear up an alt, then the Onyx Ring is a very strong option for quick gearing. You'll be able to get the ring to around item level 415 very quickly just by using the first few gems you get your hands on.
