Fortnite Returns to Google Play Store on March 19, 2026 – Everything You Need to Know

Android welcomes Fortnite!

Fortnite officially returns to the Google Play Store worldwide on Thursday, March 19, 2026, ending a nearly six-year absence. The global launch coincides with the start of Chapter 7 Season 2 (Showdown). Android users will get the full Fortnite experience, including Battle Royale, Fortnite OG, LEGO Fortnite, Festival, and all creator-made worlds, with one-tap install directly from Google Play.

For players who have been sideloading Fortnite through the Epic Games Store app or relying on Xbox Cloud Gaming to play on their phones, this is the convenience update you have been waiting for. For anyone who simply stopped playing Fortnite on mobile because the installation process was too confusing, one tap in the Play Store and you're in.

Why Was Fortnite Removed From the Google Play Store?

Fortnite was removed from the Google Play Store in August 2020 after Epic Games introduced a direct payment option inside the app, allowing players to buy V-Bucks while bypassing Google's standard 30% commission on in-app purchases. Google pulled the game from the storefront the same day, and Epic immediately filed a lawsuit alleging anticompetitive practices.

What followed was one of the most closely watched legal battles in gaming. A San Francisco jury sided with Epic in December 2023, ruling that Google had maintained an illegal monopoly over Android app distribution. A federal judge then issued an injunction requiring Google to open up its platform to competing app stores and alternative payment methods. The case went through appeals, with the U.S. Supreme Court declining to block the injunction in October 2025.

During those years, Android players who wanted Fortnite had to install it through the Epic Games Store app, which required sideloading. This process involved navigating multiple security warnings and manually updating APKs. It worked, but it wasn't exactly a smooth experience, and it kept many casual players away from mobile Fortnite entirely.

What Is the Epic Games vs Google Settlement?

Epic and Google proposed a settlement in November 2025, which was formalized with revised terms in early March 2026. The deal fundamentally changes how the Google Play Store works for developers:

  • Lower commissions: Google's standard cut drops from 30% to 20% for in-app purchases on new app installs, and 10% for recurring subscriptions. There is an optional additional 5% fee if developers choose to use Google Play Billing.
  • Third-party app stores: A new "Registered App Stores" program will make it significantly easier for users to install and update apps from alternative marketplaces, removing the security warnings that previously discouraged sideloading.
  • Developer freedom: Apps can now direct users to alternative payment methods both within their apps and via external web links.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney called the settlement a win for Android's "vision as an open platform." As part of the agreement, Sweeney has reportedly agreed not to publicly criticize the Play Store until 2032. The Epic Games Store for Android will continue to operate alongside the Play Store presence, with a more robust rollout planned for later in 2026.

What Does This Mean for Android Players?

The biggest change is pure convenience. Starting March 19, you can open the Google Play Store, search for Fortnite, tap install, and start playing. No more sideloading, no more security pop-ups, no more manual APK updates. Your progress, skins, and V-Bucks carry over seamlessly, as Fortnite supports full cross-play and cross-progression across PC, consoles, and mobile.

Here is what you are getting on Android:

  • Battle Royale (the core experience, including Chapter 7 Season 2 on day one)
  • Fortnite OG (the permanent throwback mode)
  • LEGO Fortnite (both Odyssey and Brick Life)
  • Fortnite Festival (the rhythm game mode)
  • Rocket Racing
  • All creator-made multiplayer worlds and experiences

If you are a returning player who has not touched Fortnite since 2020, the game has expanded dramatically. LEGO Fortnite alone is practically a full game within a game, and Fortnite Festival has turned into a genuinely fun rhythm game. We would recommend trying everything at least once before committing to the Battle Royale grind.

What Is Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 2 Showdown?

The Google Play return lands on the same day as Fortnite's new season, Chapter 7 Season 2, officially titled "Showdown." The season's story centers on a rivalry between The Foundation (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) and The Ice King, two of the most iconic characters in Fortnite's lore, with The Dark Voyager pulling strings behind the scenes.

The Showdown Battle Pass (800 V-Bucks) features a stacked roster of skins:

  • The Foundation (Dwayne Johnson)
  • Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes crossover)
  • Ice King (returning villain)
  • Jules (updated remix skin)
  • New original skins and additional crossover characters

For returning mobile players, this is a great season to jump back in. The "choose a side" mechanic between The Foundation and Ice King echoes the popular Chapter 2 Season 2 faction system, and the combination of familiar faces with fresh gameplay should make the transition back to Fortnite smooth.

What Are the V-Bucks Price Changes?

There is one thing to be aware of before you dive in: V-Bucks pricing is changing on March 19, the same day Fortnite returns to Google Play. Epic says the cost of running Fortnite has increased and is adjusting pricing accordingly. You are getting fewer V-Bucks for the same real-money price:

Pack PriceBefore (V-Bucks)After March 19 (V-Bucks)
$8.991,000800
$22.992,8002,400
$36.995,0004,500
$89.9913,50012,500

The Battle Pass now costs 800 V-Bucks (down from 1,000), but the total V-Bucks you can earn back has also dropped. You will earn exactly 800 V-Bucks, with no Bonus Rewards V-Bucks available anymore. Fortnite Crew subscribers will see their monthly V-Bucks grant reduced from 1,000 to 800 as well.

One partial offset: Epic is offering a 20% cashback through its Epic Rewards program on purchases made via Epic's own payment system on PC, iOS, Android, and the web. If you are going to buy V-Bucks, using Epic's payment option will stretch your money a bit further.

What Should You Expect Next?

The Google Play return is the headline, but there is more on the horizon. Fortnite: Save the World, the original co-op PvE mode that predates Battle Royale, is going completely free-to-play on April 16, 2026. It is a cooperative tower-defense and shooter hybrid where you build forts and fight off waves of monsters with up to three other players. It will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and cloud gaming platforms, though not on mobile or the original Switch.

Epic has also hinted at major content coming over the next 6 to 12 months, and leaked crossovers for Season 2 include Overwatch characters, more Looney Tunes, and potentially Kingdom Hearts and Game of Thrones. This is shaping up to be one of Fortnite's busiest seasons yet.
