How to run a test Twitch Stream

Make sure your stream is up to scratch!

Whether you’re an experienced streamer, or looking to start up your stream for the first time, it’s always a good idea to test things out. The best way of doing this is with a test stream.

The best way to run a test stream is to use Twitch’s in-build stream tester. To use this, visit the Twitch Inspector website. Log in, and you’ll be faced with the Twitch Inspector Dashboard.

At this point, make sure you have OBS or Streamlabs OBS up and running. You’re going to be starting your stream as normal, but at the end of the stream key, you’ll need to input the postfix bandwidthtest=true. These instructions are repeated on the Twitch Inspector page, where you’ll also be able to view your stream.

The Twitch Inspector site will give you numerous details about your stream, such as your bit rate, and any dropped frames. You’ll also be able to tell whether the stream has good latency, or whether it’s lagging.

Twitch has a few minimum requirements for it's streams, so it’s important to keep them in mind. These are either a 4,500 to 6,000 kbps bitrate and at least a 60 or 50 fps framerate. You change these settings in OBS. The Twitch Inspector and test stream function will ensure you meet these thresholds.
