When you reach Hiram Shaw's Church in the northeast area of the map, here you'll need to explore the location and find some important items. It's all part of the quest to get Purify Word of Power in Midnight Suns. Follow these instructions on how to solve Shaw's Church puzzle:

  • While inside the church, use the Open Word of Power to unlock the door to the study room.
  • Get near the table and use Reveal Word of Power. If you don't have it yet, check out our guide on how to get all Words of Power.
  • Interact with the papers on the table.
  • You'll notice three clues that show you the locations of Witch Covens in Midnight Suns.
  • Each paper has a specific symbol attached and a drawing of the location. You'll need this a bit later. For now, continue church exploration.
  • Use Open Word to unlock the door behind the table in the study room.
  • Head right and inspect the glowing ward.
  • Return to the Abbey and speak to Dr. Strange.
  • Here you'll need to pause this quest until you defeat Venom in combat. By doing this, you'll get a sample of the Symbiote.
  • Dr. Strange will use it to create an item that will break the ward in Hiram Shaw's Church.

  • The first Witch Coven is located near Standing Stones.
  • The second Witch Coven is located east of Dreamer's Descent in a small cave.
  • The third Witch Coven can be found at the end of the stream west of the Abbey.

Give Stained Soil to Agatha and head to Hanging Tree, located west of Shaw's Church, next to the graveyard. Use Reveal Word of Power to see the tree. Here you'll find a Moon Seal in the roots of the tree. By doing this, you'll complete the Hiram Shaw's Church puzzle.

Why can't I find Stained Soil in Midnight Suns Witch Coven Locations?

Although you can locate three Witch Covens fairly early in the game, you can't retrieve Stained Soil mystery items until you obtain and study the Symbiote sample and complete the story battle The Bell Tolls. Afterward, you can visit Midnight Suns witch covens and gather Stained Soil.
