All Altaria weaknesses and Best Counters in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

A Dragon that knows Moonblast is dangerous!

Altaria is a Dragon/Flying Type with a lot more defensive stats than offensive in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. It has a 490 Base Stat Total, making it one of the weaker Dragons, but it has many Status moves that can increase its threat potential. When battling Altaria, it's a good idea to hit it with Physical moves and take advantage of its massive weakness to Ice. These are all of Altaria's weaknesses and the best Pokémon to counter them in Scarlet and Violet.

What is Altaria weak to in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

Altaria is Dragon/Flying Type with a good set of Status moves it can learn. It's not too slow, but many Pokémon can outspeed and take it out before it can move. It can deal a lot of damage with both Dragon Pulse and Moonblast, making it pretty dangerous for Pokémon with low Special Defense. Its weaknesses are:

  • Dragon - 2x
  • Rock - 2x
  • Fairy - 2x
  • Ice - 4x

Altaria's Defense stat is lower than its Special Defense, making Physical Ice Type moves the best way to defeat it. Ice Shard, Ice Spinner, and Icicle Crash are all capable of dealing with it from a Pokémon with a decent amount of Attack.

What is Altaria immune to in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

With a dual Flying Type Pokémon, Altaria is immune to Ground moves. This makes it easy for Altaria to switch in against Pokémon using Earthquake or Earth Power. Its Ability, Natural Cure also allows it to heal itself from Status Conditions by just switching out.

What is Altaria strong against in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

Altaria uses its defensive stats well and resists damage from five Types. This makes up for its lower offensive stats while still being able to put pressure on in battle. It will take reduced damage from:

  • Fighting - 1/2
  • Fire - 1/2
  • Water - 1/2
  • Bug - 1/2
  • Grass 1/4

It can use the move Cotton Guard to increase its Defense stat, making Physical moves deal less damage to it. Although it isn't among the strongest Dragon Type Pokémon in the game, it has a lot of utility in moves like Tailwind and Haze, among other TM moves it can learn. It has very good Egg moves to take advantage of as well.

What are the best counters to Altaria in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

The best counter to Altaria would have to be strong and fast Pokémon that can hit it on the Physical side. Weavile and Baxcalibur are great examples as they both outspeed Altaria and can usually take it out with one Ice Type move. Cetitan is also a fantastic counter and has a lot of HP to take any hit from Altaria if it doesn't knock it out first.
