Everything we know about OSRS Sailing Navigation Skill

Fresh of the boat.

Let's be clear: Old School Runescape (OSRS) is a game that looks old. But visuals are secondary here, as the content is what makes this title popular. OSRS is an ever-evolving game that developers improve in cooperation with the fan base, one of which is the introduction of the Sailing skill in Runescape. Here's what we know about sailing, navigation, and the sea.

OSRS Sailing Navigation Mechanics Guide

How to start sailing in OSRS - Navigation mechanics

Sailing Navigation mechanics in OSRS are very intuitive and easy to use. To control the ship in Runescape, you must board and right-click the wheel. This will lock your character next to the wheel so you can only move the ship. Now all you have to do to move the boat is to click where you want to go. To stop driving, right-click again to return your character; now you can move around the ship and do other activities, like operate the cannon. Although you can have multiple players on the boat, only one can control it at a time.

How fast can I sail in OSRS?

Most ships in OSRS have a sailing speed set between 0.5 and 2 tiles per tick. Hence, you'll need to get a speedier boat to sail faster. How fast the ship is depends on things like boat size, type, and of course, wind strength. As for open sea fishing in OSRS, we still don't know whether the activity is possible from the boat.

What ship sizes are available with the Sailing skill in OSRS?

Ships in OSRS are divided into three categories based on their size: small, large, and colossal. While you can operate small and large vessels on your own, colossal requires a group of players. Here's how these vessels look stats-wise in the table below.

Types of sea in OSRS

The most significant difference in sea types in OSRS is the depth, as some ship types can't reach certain areas.

  • Shallow sea - Suitable for small and large ships.
  • Open sea - Good for all ship types.
  • Deep sea - Best for colossal ships and, in some cases, large ones. Small ships can't sail here.

That's everything we know about OSRS Sailing navigation mechanics at the moment. This skill is still in development, so you can expect many things to change before it rolls out; the OSRS developers are working on improving navigation mechanics and introducing new types of vessels, weather conditions, and sea content in general.
