Final Fantasy 16 – How to use Heatwave in FF16

Block magic with fire.

Final Fantasy XVI's combat is fast-paced and hard-hitting, mainly because of the powerful Eikon abilities Clive has at his disposal. I particularly love the flash fire moves of the Phoenix, but one that has been hard for me to get down is the Heatwave ability. This Phoenix ability acts as a block, counter, and powerful attack, which can be tricky to pull off.

How to use Heatwave ability in FFXVI

Heatwave is a Phoenix Eikon ability and, thus, must be assigned to one of your Eikon commands. However, you'll need to unlock Heatwave before you can equip it. Once you do, follow the steps below to equip the Phoenix Heatwave ability in FFXVI.

  • Open the Menu.
  • Navigate to the Attributes tab.
  • Select your Phoenix abilities.
  • Equip Heatwave.

Once you have equipped Heatwave, you can hold R2 and press the assigned button to activate Heatwave. Mine is assigned to R2 and Square. One thing to note with Heatwave is that it requires specific timing and a magic attack. Wait before the magic attack hits Clive and activate Heatwave to trigger a powerful counter-attack.

You can unlock Heatwave at any time once you reach the Sunrise, Sunset quest. To unlock it, purchase Heatwave from the Phoenix Eikon ability tree for 120 Ability Points. Once you've done this, you can freely assign it to one of your Eikon commands or upgrade it for 620 Ability Points. Unlocking and upgrading abilities will require a lot of AP, so start collecting and hoarding Ability Points now.
