Stardew Valley Guide: how to put bait on fishing rod

Here's how to put bait on your fishing rod in Stardew Valley.

Bait is a unique item in Stardew Valley that can speed up the process it takes for fish to bite the hook of your fishing rod; however, it's not exactly clear how to put the bait on a fishing rod.

In short, to put bait on a fishing rod, you will need to get either a fiberglass or iridium rod; this is because the starting fishing rod, the bamboo rod, does not have a equip slot for bait. Once you have a proper fishing rod, you can then put bait on the fishing rod by left-clicking the bait stack and then right-clicking the fishing rod.

As a side note, if you are wondering how to equip bait, chances are you are new to the game; for that reason, we recommend getting the fiberglass rod as an upgrade to the bamboo rod. You can get the fiberglass rod when you get to level two in fishing.

After this, the rod will become unlocked, and you buy it from Wily's fish shop down on the beach in pelican town for 1800k gold. If you want to get the Iridium Rod later on, you will need to level fishing to level six; after that, you can buy it like the last one at Wily's fish shop for 7500k gold.

You can also get bait at the same shop for five gold and craft it with bug meat; if you don't know how to get bug meat, you get it from killing the monsters listed below.

  • Bug: You can find bugs down in the mines through levels one to 29 with a 76 percent chance to drop bug meat as loot.
  • Cave Fly: You can find cave flys down in the mines through levels one to 29 with a 90 percent chance to drop bug meat as loot.
  • Grub: You can find grubs down in the mines through levels 11 to 29 with a 60 percent chance to drop bug meat as loot.
