Borderlands 4 confirmed for 2025, platforms revealed

Back to it, Vault hunters!

The Gamescom 2024 livestream kicked off with an exclusive trailer announcement that millions of seasoned Vault hunters have been waiting for. After continuous rumors and leaks about the development process, Gearbox's Borderlands 4 is now officially set for release sometime in 2025.

This is the latest sequel in the critically acclaimed looter shooter franchise after Borderlands 3 was released back in 2019, and the narrative-driven New Tales from the Borderlands in 2022. Rumors about Borderlands 4 first began in 2021, with Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford not shying away from hints about it, alluding that the game would be coming "sooner rather than later".

Now those rumors are reality, as the first announcement trailer for Borderlands 4 kicked off Gamescom 2024, though it was predictably short and sweet. With there's no dialogue at any point, we get a quick shot of the Firehawk emblem (meaning Lilith will be back in some fashion), and an unidentified planet full of what looks like Eridium imploding and crashing into another planet.

Amidst the fiery rubble, a hand reaches into a crater and picks up one of the all-too-recognizable masks worn by the franchise's psycho enemies, and the trailer closes out with the game title in its iconic bold gold lettering.

Now we know it'll soon be time for Vault hunters to strap up their shiniest weapons for more onslaughts of quirky alien monsters, and hopefully a standout new villain (someone on par with Handsome Jack, please). Aside from our most beloved siren, it's not known yet which other characters will be included among a recurring cast for the game in tandem with new ones. We can assume that, per tradition, the game will provide players with a roster of new playable characters, hopefully with plenty of new abilities that are, as the games like to say, "badass".

Borderlands 4 is set for release sometime in 2025. It can now be wishlisted on Steam, and will also be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Check out the announcement trailer for the game below.
