Apex Legends Breakout – Release date, Legend upgrades, and more

Big changes in Breakout!

Apex Legends Season 20, titled Breakout, will feature new gameplay, changes to Legends, the removal of shield loot, and more. After playing Apex Legends for 20 seasons, I think this season has the most drastic changes to gameplay, and many players will have an exciting time adjusting to the changes.

What is the release date of Apex Legends Season 20?

Apex Legends Season 20 releases on February 13, 2024. The season is expected to run for the standard three months, ending on April 23, 2024. This gives players plenty of time to jump into the action to level up the new Battle Pass, try out the new map rotations, and learn all the new game mechanics.

What are Legend Upgrades in Apex Legends?

Legend Upgrades are one of the biggest changes coming to Season 20. Each Legend now has a different set of abilities that can be upgraded during the match. While competing in matches, earning EVO shield points will also upgrade your Legend, unlocking new abilities at Level 2 and Level 3. Each Legend will have a tree of ability upgrades, so you can experiment with different abilities each match to try new strategies.

The Legend Ability tree will be revealed on February 12, 2024, alongside the Season 20 official patch notes. Legends will still be able to use their old abilities, but they will also get the upgradeable ones—however, the Legend Upgrades are limited to Battle Royale modes.

EVO Shield Changes in Apex Legends Season 20

Apex Legends Season 20 removes EVO Shields from ground loot, so the only way you can upgrade your EVO Shield is to earn points by doing damage, getting kills, finding EVO caches, and more. With the removal of lootable EVO Shields, players will have to rely on more skill to get them through early-game fights.

In Season 20, Shield Cores replace EVO Shields in death boxes. Shield Cores are the upgrades to the armor that a player has earned towards their EVO Shield before death. Now, if you pick up a higher Shield Core than you currently have, you will temporarily overcharge your Armor. Overcharging adds extra shield health that is held for 30 seconds before returning to your Legend Armor’s max capacity.

All Changes to Apex Legends Season 20

Along with Legend Upgrades and EVO Shield changes, Apex Legends Season 20 will also add a 120hz Performance Mode, changes to Ranked, Thunderdome as a new mixtape map, and the introduction of Tags, the replacement for Clubs.

Apex Legends Season 20 is exciting, and more information about it will be released closer to the season, but check out the Apex Legends Breakout trailer below for a sneak peek!
