War Cleric Fighter Build in BG3

A War Cleric Fighter can support allies as well as get up close in fights because of their high AC and ability to heal. Here is how you can build a War Cleric Fighter in BG3.

Best stats for War Cleric Fighters in BG3

War Cleric Fighters should focus on increasing Strength, Constitution, and Wisdom.

  • Strength: 17
  • Dexterity: 8
  • Constitution: 15
  • Intelligence: 10
  • Wisdom: 15
  • Charisma: 8

Strength will be important because the build will use strength-based weapons, which will increase damage output. Constitution is important for increasing health and maintaining Concentration on spells. Wisdom is the primary spellcasting modifier for Clerics, so you will want fairly high Wisdom to be an effective spellcaster.

War Cleric Fighter leveling guide

For your War Cleric Fighter to be most effective, you will want to start as a War Cleric. Your Deity does not matter except for roleplay purposes and some dialogue options throughout the playthrough. Here are the starting options you should choose:

  • Background: Outlander
  • Proficiencies: Insight, History

To maximize the class abilities, you will want to take 7 Levels of Cleric and 5 Levels of Fighter. You will want to get to Fighter Level 5 fairly early, so you should take 2 levels of Cleric to unlock the Guided Strike ability, then get to Level 5 Fighter to unlock the extra attack. Once you get to Level 3 Fighter, you should take the Champion subclass to further boost your damage output.

Best Spell for a War Cleric Fighter in BG3

Here are some of the best spells you can take as a War Cleric Fighter in BG3:

LevelSpells
CantripGuidance, Light, Sacred Flame, Resistance
1Bless, Cure Wounds, Guiding Bolt, Healing Word
2Aid, Hold Person, Lesser Restoration, Prayer of Healing
3Beacon of Hope, Remove Curse, Revivify, Spirit Guardians
4Banishment, Death Ward, Guardian of Faith

As a Cleric, you can prepare spells at will, so it is always a good idea to check what spells you have prepared before going into a difficult situation. You will have many options for spells as a Cleric, but remember that for a War Cleric Fighter, you will have to balance your spellcasting with attacks. You will want to take as many healing spells and debuff spells as you can to ensure you can also use actions and bonus actions for attacks during combat.

Best Feats for War Cleric Fighters in BG3

There are a number of feats that mesh well with the War Cleric Fighter build. Since you will be taking seven levels of Cleric and five levels of Fighter, you will only unlock two feats, but the two feats will be very helpful to the build. Here are some great feats to take as a War Cleric Fighter in BG3:

FeatDescription
Ability Score ImprovementIncrease one Ability by 2, or two Abilities by 1, to a maximum of 20.
DurableYour Constitution increases by 1, to a maximum of 20, and you regain full hit points each time you take a Short Rest.
Savage AttackerWhen making weapon attacks, you roll your damage dice twice and use the highest result.
SentinelWhen an enemy within melee range attacks an ally, you can use a reaction to make a weapon attack against that enemy. Target ally must not have the Sentinel Feat. You gain Advantage on Opportunity Attacks, and when you hit a creature with an Opportunity Attack, it can no longer move for the rest of its turn.

The best option for taking feats as a War Cleric Fighter is to first take the Ability Score Improvement to increase your Strength to 18 and your Wisdom to 16. For your next feat, take Durable to increase your Consitution to 16 and round out all of your ability scores.

Overall, War Cleric Fighters can be very effective martial classes while still supporting the party with decent healing. With such a versatile build, you will be able to take on a variety of situations with different spells and combat abilities.
