To start the "Explore the Ocean" quest, which will eventually lead to opening up the gate and exploring the Merfolk Kingdom, you'll need to complete the "Into the Ocean" quest. This quest begins right as you enter the ocean for the first time and will require you to heal 5 coral sites.

Once you complete this quest and speak to Ling in the Lab, you'll begin "Explore the Ocean," which will require you to heal even more coral sites. The first step to this quest is to heal 20 coral sites, which is the task that will probably take you the longest.

You'll need to heal 20 total coral sites to progress through your quest. To do this, continue to clear up junk piles, find the gold orbs, and activate the pillars under the water. This will heal the coral sites and open up more areas in the ocean. The best way to grind this out is to bring lots of snacks with you to keep your energy high, so you can endure a lot longer. The teleports also make it easier to go back and forth to sleep as well.

Once you heal all 20 coral sites, you'll experience a strange shaking under the ocean. A retreating root will appear on the ground and you'll have to follow it to its source. To do this, you may need to continue healing sites and opening up blocked areas. It will lead you directly to the Merfolk Kingdom gate.

Opening the gate can be slightly confusing because the solution isn't apparent. On the ground are four seashell-shaped tiles. If you step on one, the solution will be revealed to you right at the gate. However, to fully access these tiles, you'll need to ensure you have all the vines removed from the gate by healing all the coral sites.

The solution to open the gate will be a sequence that you need to do by stepping on the right sea-shell musical tiles. As shown above, the order you'll need to step is:

  • Right
  • Left
  • Down
  • Up

Once you complete the sequence correctly, the gate will open, allowing you to enter the Kingdom. You can now explore inside and meet all the new Merfolk characters, two of whom are actually romanceable! You can complete the quest and earn some rewards, like some extra coins.
