Destiny 2 has been running strong since 2017. Since then, developer Bungie has released numerous expansions and DLC. It has also put some of that content back into the "Destiny Content Vault." So, while it's advertised as a free-to-play game, that's more than a little misleading. Let us clear up the confusion and tell you which DLC is free right now.
Free Destiny 2 DLC and Expansions
Unfortunately, there isn't a single piece of DLC that is "free" for all players. Sony did add the Beyond Light expansion to PlayStation Plus in 2023, but that's still a paid service, so it's not technically free.

It's best to think of Destiny 2 as a "free-to-try" game rather than a "free-to-play" game. The New Light experience is woefully lacking and was it not for current players evangelizing the game to their friends, it's likely there wouldn't be much of an influx of new players.
Destiny 2 is a heavily monetized game, with 90% of the meaningful content being locked behind paywalls. Content like Raids and Dungeons is completely inaccessible. Even more frustrating is the way developer Bungie presents the content. Even though we've been playing the game since its launch in 2017, it's hard to keep up with all the content that's been added, removed, reintroduced, and locked behind paywalls. That's why it's largely an all-or-nothing approach to Destiny 2.
