What are thorns in Diablo 4, explained

Thorns out.

If you've been playing Diablo 4 since it came out, chances are quite good you've come across something that says it gives you Thorns. Here's what that means.

What are Thorns in Diablo 4?

Thorns, simply put, is something that deals damage back to the enemy who hit you. If you have something that gives you 10 Thorns, just as an example, something that hits you will take 10 damage back each time.

There are whole builds that can be built around Thorns, but it might end up being frustrating to put together since it needs some specific pieces like the Razorplate Legendary armor, but it can be something fun to try out.

How to make Thorns stronger in Diablo 4

Thorns damage scales off your character's primary stat, and that will all depend on what class you're playing as. Here's the breakdown.

  • Barbarian: Strength
  • Druid: Willpower
  • Rogue: Dexterity
  • Sorcerer: Intelligence
  • Necromancer: Intelligence

If you want to make your Thorns damage as high as it can possibly be, then it'll be important to raise your main stat up. This should just happen passively as you're equipping new gear that you find, so you shouldn't have to worry about it a whole lot, especially if you aren't building around Thorns.

Classes that take advantage of Thorns better than others are ones that are right in the mix of things like Druids and Barbarians. These are two classes that can take a beating, and that makes it so their Thorns dish out more damage before having to pop a potion or dying. If you're building around Thorns, picking either of those classes will likely be your best bet. If you're not, then just throw on what gives you the Item Level upgrade and call it a day.
