Diablo 3 Season 28 introduced the Altar of Rites. One of the roadblocks players will run into with it is Seal 23, which requires the Whisper of Atonement gem. This isn't exactly an easy gem to acquire, but it's still very doable.
Where to find the Whisper of Atonement in Diablo 3
The Whisper of Atonement was added back in Season 26, and it has since become a permanent addition to Diablo 3 that's acquired by completing the Echoing Nightmare event. Echoing Nightmare sends hordes of enemies at the player until they succumb to the waves. Players need to reach wave 125 for the level 125 Whisper of Atonement gem necessary for the Altar.
Getting to the Echoing Nightmare event is achieved by collecting a Petrified Scream, an item that drops off defeated bosses in a Greater Rift. Since Greater Rifts are what the endgame of Diablo 3 is all about, players should get these sooner or later.
How to start the Echoing Nightmare event in Diablo 3
The Echoing Nightmare event is started by using Kanai's Cube and then transmuting a Petrified Scream. This opens up a portal that players then enter to start the event.
To get a high level Whisper of Atonement, players need to survive for a long time. The tier they end on will be the tier the gem is, so making it to 125 will give the level 125 gem needed for the Altar. Players climb tiers by surviving and killing enemies, and the tiers go up faster if they can clear the area quickly.
If players don't make it to tier 125 for the max level, they can always upgrade the gem by completing Greater Rifts, so all is not lost if they die before making it to the goal. The event does keep on going past 125, but players are free to die after that because the gem is already fully upgraded and won't go any higher.
What does the Whisper of Atonement do in Diablo 3?
Outside of being used for the Altar of Rites in Diablo 3, the Whisper of Atonement is used to Augment Ancient Legendary items. This means it's an important gem to grab for players grinding through the endgame of Diablo 3.
The Whisper of Atonement can't be socketed into anything, and there wouldn't be a reason for a player to even try that in the first place as it doesn't do anything. Instead, players will just want it to open up a spot on their Altar and to augment gear.
