The Black Mushroom is an important item in Diablo 3 as it's one of the materials needed to craft the Staff of Herding. It's a difficult item to come across in the game as it doesn't have a guaranteed spawn, but there is an easy method to finding it.
How to find the Black Mushroom in Diablo 3
Finding the Black Mushroom is as simple as going to the Cathedral Level 1 waypoint in Act 1 and heading to it. However, this is largely depended on having the proper map spawn as it's not always guaranteed. Players will have to be on the lookout for a specific corner room that has two entrances.

In the above image, players can see the exact room, and sometimes it's not a far walk from the waypoint. The map is different every time, so the best method to finding the mushrooms would be to simply set the difficulty down to Normal and run through the area until the mushrooms are there. If players get lucky, all they have to do is enter the room and interact with the mushroom to get the item.
What is the Black Mushroom for in Diablo 3?
Players prioritize grabbing the Black Mushroom so they can create the Staff of Herding which is then used to open up the Whimsyshire portal. To craft the staff, the players will first need to get the blacksmith plans for it. Once that's done, they'll need the following items to craft it.
- 50,000 gold
- Black Mushroom
- Leoric's Shinbone
- Wirt's Bell
- Liquid Rainbow
- Gibbering Gemstone
Players don't necessarily ever have to set foot in Whimsyshire as it's more of a callback to the famous Diablo 2 cow level, but it's still fun to romp through the zone from time to time. Instead of cows, this one features ponies, but it's the same idea.
