The Staff of Herding requires many materials to create in Diablo 3, and one of those is the Gibbering Gemstone. Like many things in Diablo 3, it comes down to a bit of luck, and here's where players can find this pesky gemstone.
How to get the Gibbering Gemstone in Diablo 3
The Gibbering Gemstone is found in Act 3 in the Caverns of Frost. This isn't an area where players can simply take a waypoint to, but they'll instead want to warp to The Bridge of Korsikk, travel to the Fields of Slaughter, and then be on the lookout for the caverns.

There's not a set location for the Caverns of Frost to spawn at thanks to Diablo 3's randomly generated nature, so it could take a while to find. Once the correct cave is found, players will then have to go to the second floor, and that's where the Gibbering Gemstone is found. The gem drops from elite enemy Chiltara, and she's also not a guaranteed spawn, nor is the gem guaranteed to drop. As a result, players will need to be patient as this can take a while.
How to make the Staff of Herding in Diablo 3
Finding the Gibbering Gemstone is more than likely being done by players who want to ultimately create the Staff of Herding. This staff is used to open the portal to Whimsyshire, Diablo 3's version of a secret cow level.
The Gibbering Gemstone is just the first of a long list of things needed to craft the staff. Here's a look at what players will need to gather.
- 50,000 gold
- Black Mushroom
- Leoric's Shinbone
- Wirt's Bell
- Liquid Rainbow
- Gibbering Gemstone
It's a time-consuming process, but since it's part of completing the Season 28 Altar of Rites, players will need to come down this path sooner or later. At least players will get to obliterate some ponies in Whimsyshire.
